Course Overview (MAC 2311) MAC 2311 Course Catalog Description: Calculus with Analytic Geometry I Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C in MAC 1140 and MAC 1114 or MAC 1147 or MAC 1142 or MAC 1132 or MAC 1104 and MAC 1114 or appropriate score on an approved assessment. Topics include: Circle and parabola, limits and continuity, derivatives of algebraic and trigonometric forms, applications of derivatives, definite and indefinite integral. Gordon Rule course. Minimum grade of C required if MAC 2311 is used to satisfy the Gordon Rule and general education requirements. Course Learning Outcomes: Demonstrate an understanding of the limiting process as it applies to functions, continuity, derivatives and integrals. Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of derivative including its geometric and physical Calculate derivatives of functions using rules of differentiation. Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of integral including its geometric and physical Calculate indefinite and definite integrals. Solve applied problems using derivatives and integrals. Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C in MAC 1140 and MAC 1114 or appropriate score on an approved assessment. Course Structure: This course is organized in chapter modules. Each module includes some or all of the following: notes, videos, homework assignments, quizzes, course discussions, and exams. The cumulative final exam must be taken during finals week. Textbbooks and Required Materials (MAC 2311) Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 8th edition, by James Stewart. · · WebAssign Access is Required: You do not specifically need a hardcopy of the text if you purchase Web Assign access since that will come with an interactive textbook. You can purchase an access code online through the WebAssign website(Links to an external site.) or at the bookstore (Links to an external site.). With the WebAssign code or the Cengage Unlimited code, you will have access to the a digital version of the textbook, homework problems, review materials and videos. Homework Review quizzes will be collected using the WebAssign program. General homework assignments will not be graded. Calculator: A graphing calculator is required. A TI-84+ calculator is recommended. Scanner: To submit assignments, you will need to scan and upload files. CamScanner, DocScanner, and TinyScanner are great apps that are easy to use to scan multiple page documents. NOTE: All quizzes, exams and graded assignments will be available through Canvas. Your course grade will be available in Canvas. Graded Activities Homework: Completion of homework on a regular basis is crucial to your success in this course. Suggested homework problems are available from the textbook and in the WebAssign course. Although these assignments are not graded, it is beneficial for you to complete the appropriate assignments before attempting the quizzes and tests. As your instructor, I would suggest that you complete a minimum of half of the problems listed for each assignment. If you do only part of the assignment, choose a variety of problems: some easy ones, some medium ones, and some hard ones. You are encouraged to seek assistance from the instructor if you encounter difficulties with the assigned problems or visit the online math tutoring; see Student Support Services. Exams and Quizzes: You must complete each exam within the time allotted. Every quiz score will be used in the computation of your overall course grade unless otherwise specified. All exam scores will be used in computation of your overall course grade unless otherwise specified. The lowest exam score will be replaced with the final exam percentage if it is beneficial to your overall course grade. No make-up exams or quizzes will be given. If you miss an exam or a quiz, you will earn a zero for that assignment. Exams and most quizzes will be accessed and submitted using PDF format through Canvas. Failure to take the Final Exam will result in a grade of F for the course. For Fall 2021, exams and quizzes will not be proctored, but they will be timed. Since all assignments are submitted through Canvas (unless otherwise noted), access to a computer is required for this course. Students have free access to computers at all Valencia campuses. Canvas lists minimum computer specifications and supported browsers to ensure compatibility. The Chrome browser is recommended. Students are also encouraged to install the Canvas app on their Android phone or iPhone in order to receive mobile notifications and to access your courses via your mobile device. In the case of a prolonged online absence, please communicate with me as soon as possible in order to create a plan for the best course of action. Netiquette: It is important to be aware of your behavior in an online learning environment to ensure positive interactions with your instructor and peers. The focus in this course is to create a hospitable and accountable community. Expectations of Instructor: The instructor will reply to emails within approximately 24 hours on weekdays and 48 hours on the weekends. The instructor will provide feedback on submitted work within 5 days; tests will probably take a little longer. Course Policies (Valencia) In this course, you will experience a variety of learning activities to help you meet the course learning outcomes. To have the most meaningful learning experience, I believe your experiences matter, and it is important to connect what we learn to your "real world." This means that active participation, timely submission of assignments, and ongoing dialogue are necessary for you to be successful. Attendance Policy: This is an online course, available 24/7, managed through Canvas. You must have access to the Internet (available on all Valencia campuses) to complete the course requirements. Your online attendance will be checked each week based on your participation in the course and submission of coursework. In the event of an extended absence, you should contact me via email or phone as soon as possible to indicate the reason. Withdrawal Policy: Per Valencia Policy 4-07 (Academic Progress, Course Attendance and Grades, and Withdrawals), a student who withdraws from class before the withdrawal deadline of November 3, 2021, for Full Term classes will receive a grade of “W”. A student is not permitted to withdraw after the withdrawal deadline. A faculty member may withdraw a student up to the beginning of the final exam period for violation of the class attendance policy. A student who is withdrawn by faculty for violation of the class attendance policy will receive a grade of W. Any student who withdraws or is withdrawn from a class during a third or subsequent attempt in the same course will be assigned a grade of F. If you do not review the Orientation Module, complete the Introduction discussion, and the How to Use WebAssign Assessment (and any applicable modules) within the first week of class (see course calendar), you will be withdrawn from the course (No-Show Policy). After that period, if you wish to withdraw from the course, you must do so by November 3, 2021, to receive the grade of W. If you do not withdraw and do not take the final exam, you will receive F in the course. Academic Integrity: All forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited at Valencia College. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, acts or attempted acts of plagiarism, cheating, furnishing false information, forgery, alteration or misuse of documents, misconduct during a testing situation, facilitating academic dishonesty, and misuse of identification with intent to defraud or deceive.
