In response to Coates, in his piece "The Paranoid Style of American Policing" for the Atlantic, author Ta-Nehisi Coates performed a remarkable job of exposing the ridiculous and illogical behavior of many police officers in America. Coates' post went in-depth on how police treat the black community and how they currently overuse violence in normally mild circumstances. Numerous cops have overpoliced and scared black people without justification, which has resulted in numerous fatalities. The readers are drawing comparisons between Coates' account of the 19-year-old who was fatally shot in his father's home for no other reason than that he was acting a little aggressively as he tells the incident. People who don't trust the police are less likely to call them for assistance in emergency situations, which worsens the problem because they don't think the police can be trusted to aid. According to the story, the brother of a victim of police abuse had little chance of holding the policemen accountable for the murder of their sibling. Imagine being unable to even believe that justice will be served for a loved one. These officers ultimately receive a warning for their dishonest and inhumane actions, which motivates other officers to be laxer with the laws they are supposed to uphold. A child repeats the same behavior when there are no repercussions for their acts.Coates shares how increasingly there is a distrust between communities and the police. This is worse for the communities as now who do they turn to for protection and safety?
