THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
PASS THE PEN
1. Outer part of the respiratory system
EONS
2. Voice box of the respiratory system
LRYNXA
3. Occupy most of the thoracic cavity
UNLGS
WHAT PARTS DO YOU KNOW THAT ARE IN THE
NERVOUS SYSTEM?
• Brain
• Spinal Cord
• Peripheral Nerves
BRAIN- the control system of our body
CEREBRUM
CEREBELLUM
MEDULLA or
BRAINSTEM
The Brain
Frontal Lobe
Parietal Lobe
Touch and taste
Movement and Speech
CEREBRUM
the largest
structure in
the brain.
Occipital Lobe
Sight
CEREBELLUM
Temporal Lobe
Hearing and smell
Second largest part of the brain.
Responsible for balance, posture
and movement coordination.
BRAINSTEM
Controls basic life function
SPINAL CORD
▪ It is the extension of the
brain.
▪ The main function is to serve
as pathway of messages to
and from the brain.
▪ Serve as “reflex center”.
Nerve Cells or Neuron
• Basic units of the Nervous System.
• Main function is to carry and collect
messages or nerve impulses.
• Three types of nerves:
Sensory nerve- brain and spinal cord
receive nerve impulses
Motor nerves- send instructions of
appropriate action
Connector nerves- connect the sensory
nerves and motor nerves and carry
impulses
Why are neurons connected?
Are all neurons equal in size?
• Brain vs spinal cord vs peripheral nerves?
About how many neurons are in the human brain?
100 billion
About how many neurons are in the spinal cord?
1 billion
How long do you think the longest axon in the world is?
around 15 feet
What if
neurons die

GROUP ACTIVITY
Group 1- Label the Neurons and explain
the function of neuron
Group 2- label the parts of the brain and
its function
Group 3- Give the functions of the the 4
lobes of the cerebrum
How can you keep your
nervous system healthy?
The Brain
Did You Know…
> The brain weighs about 3
pounds.
> The right side of the brain
controls the left side of the
body and the left side
controls the right side of
the body.
Did You Know…
➢ The brain is made up of
75% water.
➢ There are no pain
receptors in the brain,
therefore it can not feel
pain.
➢ The human brain is the
fattest organ in the body.
It is about 60% fat.
Evaluation:
A. Match the descriptions in Column A with the words in Column B.
Column A
1. Controls movement of muscle
2. Basic unit of the nervous
system
3. An automatic response to
stimuli
4. Controls basic life functions
5. Pathway of messages from
nerves to the brain
6. Carry messages from the
sense organ to the brain

c. How does an impulse pass from one
nerve cell to the next?
Did You Know…
➢ There over a billion nerve
cells in the human body.
➢ Nerves can carry signals
at 100 meters per
second.
➢ If all your neurons were
lined up, they would form
a 600 mile long line.
➢ Neurons are the largest
cell in the body; they do
not undergo the process
of mitosis.
