The main units of sociolinguistic research are
sociolinguistic variables, which are characterized
by correlation with a certain level of language
structure: phonological, morphological, syntactic,
lexical–semantic, and with changes in social
structure or social situations. And the most
common problems that science studies are the
problem of social differentiation of language at all
levels of its structure, and the interrelationships
between linguistic and social structures.
Main Problems
of
sociolinguistics
The studies and analysis of scientific literature and scientific
research revealed and showed the following relevant problems
of our time:
The problem of social
differentiation of language.
Interaction of language
and culture.
The problem of social
aspects of bilingualism.
The problem of
language policy
The problem of social differentiation of
language. The problem was first highlighted
by Jan Baudouin de Courtenay. He
proposed horizontal (depending on the
territory) and vertical (actually social)
division of the language. The social
differentiation of a language, as a rule, is
the emergence of varieties of language
caused by the social stratification of its
speakers.
The social differentiation of the language
appears in the presence of social dialects:
Class dialect
According to the
dictionary of
sociolinguistic terms,
class dialect is a socially
conditioned variety of
language used in
various communicative
fields by representatives
of the same group.
Examples
Bathroom – toilet;
Sofa – couch;
I have already done it –
I did it.
The class dialect can also
be observed at the
phonetic level, house –
[aʊs] instead of [haʊs],
pronouncing
unpronounceable sounds
– fork – [fɔːrk], arm - [ɑːrm].
Professional
terminology
Professional
terminology /
vocabulary – specific
vocabulary to
particular professional
groups, used in the
speech of people
united by a common
profession.
Examples
Alien – Ecology
Alum – Chemistry
Belt – Geography
Calculus – Medicine
Deposition – Geology
Insult – Medicine
Patch – Engineering,
programming
Territorial dialect
The language of
ethnic minorities
Examples
Ethnic Kazakhs
that live outside;
People who
emigrated to
another country;
Different people
who live in our
country such as
Uighurs, Tatars,
Turkish, Koreans.
It is problematic to preserve the
language of ethnic minority
groups in the new environment.
Despite all the difficulties,
language continues to play the
role of an integrating factor.
Even in the conditions of the
loss of the national language
by the majority of
representatives of the ethnic
minority group, it is used as a
Youth slang
symbolic indicator of the selfaffirmation of the ethnic group. Youth slang –
characteristic of a
group of people of a
certain age.
Territorial dialect is a form
of language existence
characterized by territorial
limitations, limited spheres
of use and opposed to other
dialects and literary
language.

The problem of the interaction
The problem of the interaction of language and culture.
Language arises simultaneously with the nation, is its
creation, as well as the organ of the original thinking of
the nation.
V. Humboldt noted: "language is the breath, the very
soul of the nation." The presence of a single national
language unites the nation.
The links between language and other components of
culture are two-sided. The processes of contact
between different cultures are reflected in lexical
borrowings.
The problem of social aspects of
bilingualism or multilingualism
Typical problems of bilingual children can be:
1. Limited vocabulary.
2. Simplification of verbal constructions.
3. Violations of the grammatical structure of
the language.
4. Incorrect pronunciation.
One of the important sociolinguistic problems is the
problem of the social aspects of bilingualism
(bilingualism) and diglossia (the interaction of
various socially opposed subsystems of one
language). In the conditions of bilingualism, two
languages coexist with each other within the
framework of one collective that uses these
languages in various communicative spheres,
depending on the social situation and other
parameters of the communicative act.
The problem of language policy
The problem of language policy is a set of measures
taken by the state, party, class, social grouping to change
or preserve the existing functional distribution of
languages or language subsystems, to introduce new or
preserve old language norms.
Thus, the analysis showed that sociolinguistics is, first of
all, a single set of how people use language to create,
express and certify their needs.
