Answer ALL the questions. 2. Read each question carefully to determine exactly what is required before attempting the answer. 3. Set your answers out in a systematic way under appropriate headings and sub-headings. Information Vince, Thabo and Lindi are three newly trained astronauts who must fly a research mission to the moon under the guidance of their proje manager Rajesh. The team have been preparing for their mission for three weeks and have had several briefings with Rajesh. In the past three weeks, th have familiarised themselves with various project resources - learned to drive moon buggies, operate remote excavators, and operate a spectrometer for assessing sample viability. It has taken four days’ training to get the team familiar with these expensive and complicate resources that have been provided to help them succeed in their mission. In these briefings, they have heard that Rajesh brought this team together because NASA wants them to verify some indicative findings the landings of Luna 17 in November 1970 and Luna 20 in February 1972 near the Sea of Tranquillity. The samples gathered from these missions indicate that contained in the frozen water on the moon can be found remains of sea-dwelling creatures or micro-fossil called Ediacan. The reason for revisiting these old Luna mission findings is quite intriguing. Scientists have recently discovered that these luna microfossils could contain a key ingredient in the cure for COVID 19. Rajesh was appointed project manager to lead and assemble a team with an awfully specific make-up: lunar palaeontologist Vince, oceanographic microbiologist Thabo, and bacterial research expert Lindi. Rajesh is an experienced research and exploration leader, and was appointed as the project manager because of this wealth of experience in leading scientific expeditions. Knowing that they have a l who knows what to expect from them and how to plan for succeeding in a hostile environment has given them the confidence that they c succeed in finding viable microfossil deposits. Rasjesh is an inspirational type of leader who leads by example, believes in the art of the possible and has already – based on his expert knowledge in scientific expeditions for artefact recovery - given them some practical suggestions on how to collect and store the microfossils. They have been brought together as a team to find these microfossils near the of Storms, to establish if enough of the microfossils exist to set up excavations and to devise a viable strategy for transporting the fossils to earth if it is viable. In fact, this team has come together with the common norm of helping – the people of the planet, the researchers a each other. The overall project objective is to help researchers to find a cure for COVID 19. They will know that they have done their job they deliver the viable samples in the hands of the researchers. The responsibilities of the team include finding one or more sites of microfossil deposits, establishing a way to excavate these deposits ( the hostile environment of the moon), and to preserve the fossils for the flight back to earth – all within 2 weeks of landing on the surface moon. The project charter also stated that the fossils should be of a high quality so that a little can go a long way. The team are excited about being part of an important mission and Lindi has designed a logo for their team which is the picture of a roun COVID virus with a seashell on top – representing their fossil being on top of COVID. In addition to being the team’s bacterial research e she is also responsible for team morale and welfare – a critical role in an away from home mission where things can easily go wrong. Th team adopted the slogan “we are on top of it” for their mission. The team also adopted a code of conduct which embodies their primary and key ethical principles: they will deliver what the project asks of them, they will deliver safely and on time, and with minimal harm to t environment. In addition to being the team’s lunar palaeontologist, Vince has been assigned responsibility for the preservation of all the collected mate and fossils. This means that all the team members report to Rajesh, but in terms of the microfossils, they also report to Vince, since the preservation of the microfossils is the key deliverable of the mission. Vince must make sure the fossils are stored safely and under ideal conditions, and explain to the team members how to excavate the fossils so as best to preserve them. Thabo too has a key role over an above being the oceanographic microbiologist on the team, as he is responsible for the mission's safety and security – including persona safety, mechanical safety, and security of the excavated material. His word is the law when it comes to the physical safety of the team o moon, although Rajesh has overall responsibility for the project. Rajesh is also the escalation point for team conflict and problem-solving Should the team encounter problems or conflicts that cannot resolve on their own, they must formally submit the problem and a recomm solution to Rajesh for review. He will then assess if their proposed solution can work, and recommend approval to the project board, or provide them with feedback and guidance on how to come up with a better solution. Many scientists and pharmaceutical players, as well as the leadership team and sponsor, NASA, are keeping their eye on every move w the team, as not only can the return of viable samples deliver the world from living with COVID 19, but unknown fortunes can be earned manufacturers of the new COVID vaccine if the microfossils turn out to be the cure it is speculated to be. They are not even allowed to tell their families what their mission is, as the secret, once out in the open, could spa race to the moon by various players to excavate the microfossils. Since Rajesh is a very democratic leader, who invites decision making by team consensus and equal contribution, he has asked the team prepare a team charter, to which he is willing to contribute as much input as they need. He has also asked them to come up with a name their team – one that reflects the importance of their mission. Question 1 Marked out of 35.00 Write your answer in the space provided.
