A. Perform a case study or research about the DIFFERENT design perspectives of the
Lycoming and Continental aircraft reciprocating engines.
Aircraft Engines that are used in general aviations are usually Lycoming or Continental
Engines. Both of these companies produce engines that share similarities and differences in
regards to their designs.
One major design difference is the positioning of the camshaft, for Lycoming, it is
located above the crankshaft while on the Continental, it is located below the crankshaft.
According to Gujjari (2015), Continental Engines number their cylinders from the back to the
front while Lycoming numbers them from the front to the back. Continental Engines also tend
to cost more with parts being more expensive than the Lycoming counterpart.
The Carburetor which is used for mixing air and fuel together is attached to the oil
slump in a Lycoming Engine. The heat of the oil makes it so that the carburetor does
experience carburetor icing. In a Continental Engine, the Carburetor is located in a separate
intake maniforld which means that it does not prevent Carburetor Icing.
Lycoming and Continental excels in different horsepower engines in the market.
Lycoming has engines in the 150-200 horsepower range while they lack in the 125 and 250
horsepower range. Continental has engines that excel in the 125 and 250 horsepower range.
In the end, they compete within the same playing field and dishes out designs that are
systematically similar. However, tests show that Continental tends to wear out their cylinders
faster than Lycoming Engines
These are some of the differences between a Lycoming and Continental Engine design
that can be pointed out when mentioning notable qualities between the two despite being
very similar to each other.
