Vietnam War What is the Vietnam War? The Vietnam War was a long conflict in Southeast Asia. It began in 1954, after the country of Vietnam was split into two parts, North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The war started because North Vietnam wanted for the countries to reunite under communism. The United States helped the South to try and stop this from happening. The South lost though and Vietnam was reunited under communism. Why did Americans protest?
