PART B X&A Cartilage Transplant and Bone Regeneration Treatment Device I. Short Background The cartilage in the bones grows overtime. It undergoes a process called endochondral ossification in which it slowly gets replaced by bone with the help of minerals such as calcium. During this process, layer upon layer of calcium and phosphate salts begin to accumulate on cartilage cells. Once encased in these minerals, the cartilage cells die, leaving tiny pockets behind. Blood vessels grow into these tiny pockets, delivering specialized cells called osteoblasts. The osteoblasts help to collect additional calcium and also produce a substance full of collagen fibers. Furthermore, osteoblasts produce layers of cortical bone that surround the cartilage. Osteoblasts become cells that work to form a sponge-like lattice of marrow and a substance inside the developing bone after making the cortical bone. Bones can’t continue to grow bigger at a specific time but they can heal and repair themselves in the case of small fractures. II. A detailed description of your invention X&A Cartilage Transplant and Bone Regeneration Treatment Device is a nanotechnology that allows the bone fractures to regenerate. It employs nanoparticles to deliver substances to a specific location of the body. Particles are engineered so that they are attracted to the cells, which allows direct treatment of those cells. This technique reduces damage to healthy cells in the body. A new cartilage is to be transplanted through nanovesicles which are then attached to the ends of the bone. Using the same manner of naturally regeneration of the bones, series of treatments is needed. The transplanted cartilage is treated continuously with substances and minerals such as calcium, phosphate salts, and collagen that are also attached to the nanoparticle, stimulating and activating cartilage regrowth and repair. This would allow ossification to happen, and thus bone would regrow. The device also generates an electric current meant to encourage bone growth. It uses ultrasonic or pulsed electromagnetic waves to speed up the process. This technology is only limited to cure bone fractures caused by accidents and lack of certain substances or minerals but not by inheritance or genetic malfunctions. III. A detailed description of why this invention is needed in our society Bones provide support, protection, production of blood cells, storage of ions, and endocrine regulation, and facilitation of movement. The X&A Cartilage Transplant and Bone Regeneration Treatment Device is essential in our society as it addresses the following issues: • • Healthcare issues. There are deficiencies in facilities and offered services in the health sector. Discrimination. Person with Disabilities (PWD), especially those with broken bones and the likes, are usually bullied and discriminated. • Science and Technology. The science, technology, and research departments, especially in the Philippines, somehow lack ideas to contribute to the society’s betterment. This invention will surely make our lives better. It will also benefit our society in different ways. The X&A Cartilage Transplant and Bone Regeneration Treatment Device will/will be… • • • • • • solve the issues regarding the health of every individual especially in filling-in a lifelong lack of substances and minerals of the bones; cure the diseases and injuries caused by accidents and aging such as osteoporosis; decreases the number of Person with Disabilities (PWD) in the country; a stepping-stone for other health-related inventions; boost the economy as people will surely invest; and give hope to those who are paralyzed and who have missing limbs.
