Child labor the 1870 census found that 1 out of every 8 children was employed. This rate
increased to more than 1 in 5 children by 1900. Between 1890 and 1910, no less than 18
percent of all children ages 10‒15 worked. Social Gospel movement supported legislation for
an eight-hour work day, the abolition of child labor and government regulation of business

States. Tammany Hall, also known as the Society of St. Tammany, the Sons of St. Tammany,
or the Columbian Order, was a New York City political organization founded in 1786 and
incorporated on May 12, 1789 as the Tammany Society.
