INTRO VIDEO Today, our focus is determining the central idea of a text and identifying textual evidence What does the Reading Section of the SAT include? Let’s watch a 2-minute video that provides an overview of the Reading Test. Following the video, write down a couple of items that stand out to you from the video, either new information or ideas that you find to be important. 3. INTRO VIDEO REMINDER: As you take the SAT, write in your test booklet, and this is especially important for the Reading section of the test. What you write—called “annotations”—will help you to stay engaged as you read and will help you to focus on the important details of the passage. • Student annotations may include the following items (look at the example on your notes) – Brief summaries—Write a one or two sentence summary every 2–3 paragraphs. – Identification of main ideas—Underline the most important parts that give you a sense of what the author is trying to communicate. – Key words—Circle specific word choices that may give you a sense of the author’s tone or perspective toward the subject. – Other marks—Some students are visual learners and may want to draw brief sketches of important information, or they may want to draw arrows between sections of the text that relate to each other. Now, let’s see a Model Annotation… 4. TEACHER MODEL VIDEO Let’s view a video on Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy, seeing annotation (and think alouds) in action. The first 2:30 of the video covers this section. As the teacher annotates the text in the video, annotate your own on your student notes. Add to his annotations (draw pictures, add notes in the margins, etc.) 4. TEACHER MODEL Let’s continue looking at the text together. QUESTIONS 9-10 QUESTION 12 5. YOUR TURN! 5. YOUR TURN! 6. KAHOOT!
