Purpose (1) C. The 289-601 series Passenger Oxygen Masks (PAX Masks) supply breathing oxygen to aircraft passengers and flight attendants during emergency decompression of the aircraft. Specifications (1) D. This section of the manual describes the components and operation of the 289-601 Series Passenger Oxygen Mask Assemblies (PAX Masks). Information from SIL-35-16, SIL 35-140 and SIL 35-123 has been incorporated into this section of the manual. Refer to Figures 1 through 21 for illustrations of the different types of PAX Masks and their attaching hardware. The 289-601 PAX Masks are qualified to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards TSO-C64 or TSO-C64a, and National Aerospace Standard NAS 1179 or AS 8025. (Configuration 289-601-211-1 does not qualify under TSO-C64 or TSO-C64a due to the brown color of the facepiece). In addition, many of the masks conform to customer specifications. Installation (1) Mask assemblies are installed in passenger service units, attendant stations, crew rest areas, and lavatories throughout the aircraft. The masks are automatically released for use when increased oxygen pressure or an electrical signal is applied to the deployment container. The mask assemblies are also used with portable oxygen breathing system. 35-22-26 Page 21 of 84 Feb 23/18 The data and information contained herein are proprietary to AVOX SYSTEMS INC.. Description and Operation (1) Refer to Figure 1 for Parts and Assemblies of the PAX Mask. All PAX Masks will have a facepiece assembly with breathing valves, an elastic headstrap, and a bag assembly. Most PAX Masks include a flow indicator. Some PAX Masks will also have a lanyard or actuator assembly. Other PAX Masks will have a stringer assembly. (2) The PAX Mask has two modes of operation - stowed and deployed. In the stowed mode, the mask is packed into a box located near the passenger. Since the mask is intended for use in emergencies only, it may remain stowed throughout its service life. When cabin pressure falls below a preset threshold value and supplemental oxygen is required, the PAX Mask automatically deploys in front of the passenger or attendant. The facepiece assembly is put over the mouth and nose while the elastic strap is put around the back of the head and adjusted to hold the Mask in place by pulling the ends of the elastic strap. When some masks deploy, a lanyard assembly (attached to either the tubing of the bag assembly or the facepiece assembly) must be pulled downward to start the flow of oxygen to the PAX Mask. On other configurations, a stringer with the word “PULL” printed on it must be pulled to release the mask and to start the flow of oxygen. 35-22-26 Page 22 of 84 Feb 23/18 The data and information contained herein are proprietary to AVOX SYSTEMS INC.. ABBREVIATED COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL 289-601 Series (3) Each PAX Mask assembly functions as a modified, continuous-flow system. Metered oxygen flows through the tube and into the reservoir bag. Oxygen flow is indicated by the flow indicator in the tubing or the flow indicator in the reservoir bag depending on model. Some models do not include a flow indicator. During inhalation, oxygen is drawn from the reservoir bag through the inhalation valve. When the oxygen in the bag is depleted, the ambient flapper valve opens to allow ambient air (i. e. cabin air) to enter the facepiece. The ambient valve employs a spring to prevent the valve from opening until the bag has been depleted of oxygen. When the user exhales, the inhalation and ambient air valves close and the exhalation valve opens allowing exhaled air to exit the facepiece. The reservoir bag stores oxygen for the next cycle while the user is exhaling. (4) The parts and assemblies of the PAX Mask have the following functions: (a) Bag Assembly The bag assembly (also referred to as bag and tube assembly) includes, as a minimum, a reservoir bag, bag retaining disk and oxygen tube. Some configurations may also include an end fitting, anti-kink spring, and oxygen flow actuator or lanyard assembly attached to the tubing. With the exception of the bag retaining disc and most end fittings, these components are permanently bonded together and are not intended to be disassembled. PAX Mask donning instructions and identification information are shown on the bag. 1 Reservoir Bag The reservoir bag is secured to the facepiece assembly by the bag retaining disk. A cord tied between the end of the oxygen tube (inside the bag) and valve body prevents stretching or ripping of the bag when the mask is used. 2 Tubing The clear, flexible tube transports oxygen from the oxygen supply to the bag. Some configurations may include a spring to prevent kinking of the tube and a male end fitting to connect the tube to the oxygen supply. The oxygen tube length differs among the various bag assemblies in the 289-601 series. Some configurations include a retainer clip which holds coiled lengths of the tube. 3 Flow Indicator Most bag assemblies include a flow indicator which gives visual indication when there is a flow of oxygen into the reservoir bag. There are two different types of flow indicators, but only one type is used for each PAX Mask. The different types of flow indicators are described below. 35-22-26 Page 62 of 84 Feb 23/18 The data and information contained herein are proprietary to AVOX SYSTEMS INC.. Copy and distribution to a third party are strictly forbidden. Printed in France. AVOX SYSTEMS INC. ABBREVIATED COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL 289-601 Series a The in-line flow indicator is normally bonded to the tubing of the bag assembly. In a few instances, it is part of a higher level assembly. The flow indicator shows a green stripe at the clear end of the plastic housing when there is a flow of oxygen. When there is no flow of oxygen, the green stripe is hidden behind the label of the flow indicator. NOTE : b 4 (b) A white and green label identifies a flow indicator made before April 2002. These flow indicators are not procurable. A red and white label identifies a flow indicator made after April 2002. An inflatable flow indicator is the part of the reservoir bag that is colored green. When there is a flow of oxygen into the reservoir bag, the green section of the reservoir bag inflates. When there is no oxygen flow, the green section of the bag remains flat. Actuator or Lanyard Assemblies When present, one end of the actuator or lanyard assembly is attached to the tubing at a specific location as shown in Leading Particulars in this section. The other end attaches to a control device for starting the flow of oxygen. The flow of oxygen to the PAX Mask starts when the lanyard or actuator is pulled with sufficient force. Facepiece Assembly 1 The facepiece assembly is a breathing device that delivers oxygen and cabin air to a passenger. The facepiece assembly consists of a facepiece and valve body. The facepiece is made of bright yellow silicone rubber (except 289-601-211-1 which is brown) for immediate identification. The soft, easily cleanable facepiece provides a secure seal around the user's nose and mouth. Breathing valves are located in the valve body, which also serves as an anchor for the headstrap and lanyard. 2 Breathing Valves The valve body includes an inhalation valve, ambient (dilution) valve, and exhalation valve. The ambient valve opens during inhalation allowing external air (e.g. cabin air) into the facepiece after the oxygen in the reservoir bag has been used up. The ambient flapper closes when the user breathes out. The exhalation valve closes when the user breathes in and opens when the user breathes out allowing exhaled air out of the facepiece assembly. The valves are constructed of rigid plastic with silicone rubber flappers. 3 Headstrap Assembly The headstrap assembly consists of an elastic headstrap and two teflon clasp tubes. The strap is adjustable to ensure a secure and comfortable fit while holding the mask assembly against the user's face. 35-22-26 Page 63 of 84 Feb 23/18 The data and information contained herein are proprietary to AVOX SYSTEMS INC.. ABBREVIATED COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL 289-601 Series 4 Lanyard Assembly When a lanyard assembly is present, it is attached to a hole in the valve plate of the facepiece assembly, or at the headstrap slot in the valve plate. The other end is attached to a control device for starting the flow of oxygen. The lanyard starts the flow oxygen when pulled with sufficient force after the PAX Mask is deployed. Lanyard assemblies have specific lengths as shown in Leading Particulars in this section of the manual. 5 Stringer Assembly If a stringer is present, it is attached to the lanyard ring at the facepiece assembly. The stringer must be pulled to deploy the mask and to start the flow of oxygen. Stringer lengths are shown in Leading Particulars in this section of the manual. F. Table 23 / Leading Particulars for Next Higher Assembly (3) Shelf Life The shelf life of the PAX Mask is six years from the date of manufacture when continuously stored under the temperature and humidity conditions shown below. When in storage, keep the PAX Mask in the factory package or equivalent to give protection from contamination and mechanical damage. You should keep the storage area clean and dry. Do not keep the PAX Mask in a wet location. Do not keep the PAX Mask near sources of heat. The storage area should be kept in the following temperature and humidity ranges: a temperature between 50°F and 86°F (10°C to 30°C) and a relative humidity between 5% and 95%. (4) Service Life The minimum expected service life of a PAX Mask is three years from the date of installation on aircraft.. The TSO-approved passenger masks are made primarily of plastic and elastomeric materials. Different materials will degrade at different rates depending on various environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, exposure to ultraviolet light, etc. Since the passenger masks are used in aircraft that operate around the globe in many different sets of environmental conditions, there is no absolute service life that will cover all passenger masks. Therefore, it is recommended to perform visual inspections and maintenance at the intervals specified in paragraph "Inspection Intervals" below to ensure that the mask will perform its intended function. The mask can remain in service indefinitely as long as it passes the visual inspections. (5) Inspection Intervals (a) First Inspection Do a visual inspection of the PAX Mask when it is first removed from storage and before it is installed in an aircraft. (b) In-Service Inspections Perform a visual inspection of the mask per the relevant references in Paragraph "Visual Inspection Requirements" three years after the mask is first installed. Subsequent visual inspections should be made regularly after the initial in-service inspection and not to exceed 24 months between inspections. PAX Mask - Storage A. General (1) B. This section describes the procedures necessary for storage of the 289-601 Series Passenger Oxygen Mask Assemblies (PAX Mask). Information from SIL-35-123 has been incorporated into this section. The instructions given in this section apply to all PAX Masks unless otherwise noted. Procedure SUBTASK 35-22-26-550-001-A01 (1) Storage (a) Follow the instructions in your Aircraft Maintenance Manual or other applicable instructions to fold the PAX Masks. 1 Follow instructions in the AMM to pack the PAX Mask for storage. A heat sealable polyethylene bag is recommended. 2 Store in a cool area, away from sources of high heat and humidity as recommended in paragraph below 3 Service Life, Shelf Life, and Inspection Interval Recommendations Follow guidelines for service life, shelf life, and inspection intervals using directions from the applicable aircraft maintenance manual. If there are no directions available, follow the recommendations in this paragraph. a Service Life The minimum expected service life of a PAX Mask is three years from the date of installation on aircraft.. 35-22-26 Page 83 of 84 Feb 23/18 The data and information contained herein are proprietary to AVOX SYSTEMS INC.. ABBREVIATED COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL 289-601 Series b Shelf Life The shelf life of the PAX Mask is six years from the date of manufacture when continuously stored under the temperature and humidity conditions shown below. When in storage, keep the PAX Mask in the factory package or equivalent to give protection from contamination and mechanical damage. You should keep the storage area clean and dry. Do not keep the PAX Mask in a wet location. Do not keep the PAX Mask near sources of heat. The storage area should be kept in the following temperature and humidity ranges: a temperature between 50°F and 86°F (10°C to 30°C) and a relative humidity between 5% and 95%. c First Inspection Do a visual inspection of the PAX Mask when it is first removed from storage and before it is installed in an aircraft. d In-service Inspection Perform a visual inspection of the mask per the relevant references in Paragraph "Visual Inspection Requirements" three years after the mask is first installed. Subsequent visual inspections should be made regularly after the initial in-service inspection and not to exceed 24 months between inspections. This inspection can coincide with a scheduled heavy check of the aircraft. Any failure during a visual inspection requires the mask assembly to be replaced. (b) Removal From Storage And Installation Onto Aircraft 1 Do a visual inspection of the PAX Mask if the PAX Mask was stored as stated in the "Shelf Life" Paragraph in the PAX Mask - CHECK Section of this ACMM . The PAX Mask - CHECK section tells you how to do a visual inspection of the PAX Mask. 2 Discard the PAX Mask if the mask was not stored as stated in the "Shelf Life" Paragraph in the PAX Mask - CHECK Section of this ACMM . 3 Install the PAX Mask in the aircraft, and inspect per “Inspection Intervals” in PAX Mask - CHECK section above. SUBTASK 35-22-26-510-001-A01 (2) Transportation (a) Prior to transportation, ensure that PAX Masks are properly repacked according to instructions in your Aircraft Maintenance Manual or other applicable instructions. During and after transportation, ensure compliance with "Service Life, Shelf Life, and Inspection Interval Recommendations" paragraph above. 35-22-26 Page 84 of 84 Feb 23/18 The data and information contained herein are proprietary to AVOX SYSTEMS INC..
