Advanced professional nurses can manage difficult situations by using all the social and
emotional intelligence power skills. Using these power skills, you can logically resolve conflict
in the workplace. In the social emotional learning portion of the curriculum, you will find the
five areas of social and emotional mastery power skills. These are self-awareness, selfmanagement, Interpersonal communication, the executive function, and social awareness.
Self-Awareness
The first skill we are given is self-awareness. To know our strengths and weakness will
help us be objective to understanding others’ perceptions, attitudes mindsets. Using selfawareness, you are mindful of others. When we self-reflect and have confidence in ourselves
gives us optimism in the workplace. Expressing gratitude is a good example of using selfawareness to bring joy to the workplace. When you express gratitude even for the small things
your staff will be eager to work harder and enjoy what they do.
Self-Management
Self-management helps us organize our lives. When you are accountable and can manage
one’s own behavior, this will show in the workplace. When you are self-motivated others will
feed off your time management and attention to detail, this in turn will make the workplace run
smoother and make less conflict. When you are the Advanced Practice Nurse on your floor you
will need to use self-management. Using this skill set your able to be resilience your staff needs
someone who can get them through challenging situations. When you are the leader of a team

and problems arise, you can maintain joy in the workplace. Handling conflict with accuracy and
while remaining aware of the impact this will have on your staff to come to a resolution.
Interpersonal Communication
The building of relationships comes in through our interpersonal communication skills.
When we interact with people in our workplace, they are looking as well as listening to you.
You will need to use different approaches with different people. Show them you are caring and
considerate of their time by being an active listener. Giving them your time to listen to concerns
can resolve the conflict. Work as a team and collaborate with your unit to allow all ideas to be
heard before making decision. Using different approaches with your team as their leader your
actions will motivate the team to work together. When applying this skill set building
relationships with your staff will help bond your team with mutual trust and respect. When a
team works together the workplace will be joyful place to be.
Executive Function
The executive function is the skill that will enable you to manage complex tasks. Using
this skill, you will find that problem solving, planning, and organization are just a small part of
the leadership abilities needed. Using critical thinking skill will help you evaluate and interrupt
different situations in the workplace and find a resolution. One example of promoting joy in the
workplace using the executive function would be when conflict arises between staff members
you would use your problem-solving skill set to work through the problem and come to a
conclusion that all can be happy with.

Social Awareness can be a complex skill to master. You will need to appropriately
modify your behavior and apply different communication strategies to achieve your outcome
goals. Being culturally aware and having appreciation for diversity helps you approach conflicts
with an open mind and work together for a solution. When implementing the skill set of social
awareness as an Advanced Practice Nurse to culture joy in the workplace being available to all
staff members and considering their diversities. Using your awareness to make decisions that
affect all staff that best complete your goals
Using these five areas of social and emotional skill sets, you will see working through
conflict in the workplace will become easier. When conflict is resolved the workplace is a more
joyful place to be.
Executive Function and Social Awareness
As an advanced practice nurse using social awareness and organizational skill sets to
prepare of the open house makes meeting with parents and new students easier. Socializing with
parents and student give you the opportunity to learn about their needs. Cultural awareness
promotes professional presence through socializing with the parents and a student to learn the
family needs when there is a Vaccine Religious Exemption. Even though your opinion is all
students need to have their vaccines. You will need to use your cultural awareness to respect this
parents’ decision. Your professional presence with these interactions cultures a more joyful
place for the students. On the first day of school, you will need to meet parents bringing in
medications. Using your organizational skills for the day ahead. Making copies of your MARS,
IHPs, and PPAs will make your day go much smoother. Plan for secure storage for all
medications you take into your clinic. While talking to your parents be mindful of the child’s
needs, after you acquire all information about the medication and why the child will be taking

during the school day. Asking question while parents are present will help you know how and
why this medication is being used for this child. Your professional presence will culture a respect
from the parents. This is turn will make the parents have confidence in leaving their children in
your care. With all the correct information you will then educate you staff with the needs of
your students. When all involved have the correct information to serve their students your school
is organized and ready for a great school year.
IHI Framework for Improving Joy in Work
“What matters to you?” (Perlo J, Balik B, Swensen S, Kabcenell A, Landsman J, Feeley
D. 2017) When you ask that question of your staff you will receive man different answers. Being
prepared with a whiteboard to make the feedback visible to all. Just asking will go a long way
with building relationships with your staff.
Going to the next step you will need ask, what gets in your way or frustrates you in the
workplace? Using your whiteboard make their answers visible to all. Using this feedback, you
will need to form mind map to identify what you will need to work on first. Putting a team
together of all levels of your team will give each area input on solutions. This team will need to
report back to the staff weekly on the improvements on working. Building on accomplishments
to the point will show your staff that their impute matters. Being approachable and development
of relationships with your coworkers will bring joy to your staff. Celebrate the small
accomplishments, this will help improve the joy in their work. When each person feels they
make a difference they will enjoy what they do. This in turn will make your unit run smoother
and patients’ outcomes will improve. Be a transformational leader. “Transformational leaders
inspire followers to achieve extraordinary outcomes and, in the process, develop their own
leadership capacity.” (Cavelle, J. T., & Prado-Inzerillo, M. L., 2018)
