Year 5 Design and Technology plan – CAM toys - Autumn 2
WALT
Week 1
To understand
the different
types of cam,
and how they
make followers
move.
Lesson content
Task
Discuss cams and followers – what do we already know? TPS.
Define cam – a shaped cog which is threaded through a dowel in order
to produce a particular movement.
Define follower – a piece of dowel, with a decoration on it, which rests
on the cam, and moves up and down according to the movement of
the cam.
Chn draw a
diagram of a cam
mechanism into
their books,
making sure that
they label it
correctly.
Show the diagram of a cam mechanism, and explain how it works – the
crank is turned, which turns the cam. The follower, which is resting on Once they have

To research ideas Explain that we are going to use our understanding of cam and follower
for cam toys.
mechanisms from the previous lesson in order to create our own CAM
toy based around our topic – Vikings and Anglo-Saxons.
To design my
own cam toy
based on the
Vikings and
Anglo-Saxons.
Share this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne79nEVoboo
Discuss the different cam toys the children in the video have made, and
how we could adapt these ideas in order to make our own cam toys
based on the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons.
Chn then use laptops in pairs to research different cam toy designs that
could offer some inspiration when they come to design their own cam
toy in the next lesson.
Recap last two lessons – what can we remember about cam and
follower mechanisms? TPS and discuss as a class.
Explain that, today, we are going to create a design for our own cam
toy based on the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. This design should include:
a labelled diagram of the cam toy, a description of the design, a list of
materials, a method, and an explanation of which cam wheels they will
be using.
Model the design process, showing the labelled diagram etc., to ensure
the chn understand the task.
Chn use laptops
one-betweentwo to research
a variety of
different cam
toys, in order to
gather ideas
form their own
cam toy.
Gain a bank of
ideas to base
their own ideas
upon when
designing and
making their
cam toy.
Allow chn the
majority of this
lesson to
complete their
design, which
should include:
a labelled
diagram, a
description of
the design, a list
of materials, a
method, and an
explanation of
the cam wheels
which will be
used.
Design their
own cam toy,
applying their
knowledge of
cam
mechanisms
from previous
lessons.
Year 5 Design and Technology plan – CAM toys - Autumn 2
Weeks 4
and 5
To make a cam
toy based on the
Vikings and
Anglo-Saxons.
Recap previous lesson – chn take some time to share their designs with
the other chn in the class. Can they identify any potential difficulties
which could arise during the making process? TPS.
Chn then collect their designs, and their materials, and begin to make
their cam toys – they may need to be talked through the initial process
of creating the mechanism.
Week 6
To Evaluate my
own and others’
cam toys.
Discuss the design and make process in groups – what went well, what
was difficult?
Set up a ‘cam toy gallery’ in the classroom, which will allow the chn to
all share their cam toys from the previous lessons.
Allow chn to take some time looking at the cam toys, discussing what
they like about each one, do they work, why not? Etc.
Following this, chn should look back at the whole process again – do
they like their cam toy? Why? What went well during the process?
What would they change next time? What did they find difficult during
the process?
Chn take two
lessons to make
their cam toys
according to
their design
from the
previous lesson,
including the
decorating
process.
In their books,
chn evaluate
their finished
product.
Does it look and
work how they
had envisioned
during the
design process?
What went
well? What did
not go so well?
What would
they change
next time? Etc.
To use their
design, as well
as applying
their
understanding
of cam
mechanisms
from previous
lessons to
create their
own cam toy.
To critically
evaluate their
own and others’
work, explaining
what went well,
and what
adjustments
they might
make if they
were to make it
again in the
future.
