Passage: Subhash Chandra Bose was the son of a wealthy and prominent Bengali lawyer. He went to England for
higher studies after graduating from Kolkota College in 1919. He passed the Indian Civil Service examination held
in England but resigned the coveted job to dedicate himself to the cause of his country’s freedom. The massacre of
Jallianwala Bag at Amritsar in 1919 had sent a wave of horror and indignation throughout the country. Bose
believed that his country’s freedom could come only through an armed struggle. His activities led to his
imprisonment several times. The story of his escape in disguise from Kolkota to Kabul and then to Berlin showed
his extraordinary courage. A gallant fighter, Bose finally reached Tokyo and assumed leadership of the Indian
Independence Movement in East Asia. Called Netaji, he organised men and women into the Indian National army
(Azad Hind Sena) and set up the Azad Hind Government at Singapore in 1943. Netaji’s army along with the
Japanese troops marched up to the frontiers of India and even reached Kohima in the North-east. But in a stubborn
battle, his army was compelled to surrender to the British. To continue his struggle, Bose planned to go to the USSR
to seek help. But he reportedly died in a Taiwan hospital as a result of burn injuries from a plane crash.

Son Of India: Subhash Chandra Bose
Subhash Chandra Bose who passed the Indian Civil Service examination held in England was the son of a rich and famous
lawyer. After resigning his job in England as a lawyer he dedicated his life for the freedom of India. He believed his country’s
freedom could come only though an armed struggle. After massacre of Jallianwala bag his activities led him to imprisonment
several times. He showed amazing courage to escape in disguise from Kolkata to Kabul and to Berlin and then finally reached
Tokyo. He was popularly known as Netaji when he organised Azad Hind Sena and formed Azad Hind Government. British
compelled Netaji’s and Japanese army to surrender at Kohima. He was declared dead in a plane crash while going to USSR.

Passage: ShivajiMaharaj was the founder of the great Maratha Empire. He spent his childhood in the far-off regions
of Maval. The young Shivaji Maharaj was moved by the sufferings of his people. As years passed he become a man
well-skilled in physical and military exercises. He made up his mind to free his lands from the cruel rulers. He
gathered all the ‘Mavalas’ to carve a kingdom of their own and unified them under the slogan of ‘Hindawi Swaraj’ .
He collected some faithful friends around him. They stood by him in sun and in shower, even at the cost of their
lives. Shivaji Maharaj took possession of the fort ‘Torana’ and began his career. He went on capturing all the
important forts from his enemies until he had a fairly large Maratha Empire. He struggled for decades and finally

Shivaji Maharaj: The Great Maratha
Shivaji, the founder of Maratha Empire, was moved by the sufferings of people while spending his childhood in Maval region.
Then be acquired the skill of physical and military exercises and decided to free his land from the cruel rulers. So he gathered
all his Mavalas under ‘Hindavi Swaraj’. With the help of his faithful and loyal friends he could take possession of Torana t begin
his career. Then he captured number of important forts. He struggled hard and finally became the king of Marathas in 1674.

Passage: Dengue is an infection caused by a virus. You can get it if an infected mosquito bites you.
Dengue does not spread from person to person. It is common in warm, wet areas of the world. Outbreaks
occur in the rainy season. Dengue is rare in the United States. Symptoms include a high fever, headaches,
joint and muscle pain, vomiting and a rash. In some cases, dengue turns into dengue haemorrhagic fever,
which causes bleeding from your nose, gums, or under your skin. It can also become dengue shock
syndrome, which causes massive bleeding and shock. These forms of dengue are life-threatening. There is
no specific treatment. Most people with dengue recover within 2 weeks. Until then, drinking lots of fluids,
resting and taking non-aspirin fever-reducing medicines might help. People with more severe forms of
dengue usually need to go to the hospital and get fluids. To lower your risk when travelling in dengueprone countries i) Wear insect repellent with DEET. ii) Wear clothes that cover your arms, legs and feet.

Summary: Dengue – a dreadful disease
Dengue is a non-contagious disease caused by an infection through mosquito bite. The disease spreads
mostly in warm and wet areas usually in the rains. Fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, vomiting and a
rash are its symptoms. Sometimes patient starts bleeding through nose, gums when he/she gets high
fever. These patients can recover in 2 weeks by proper treatment. Such patients should drink lots of
fluids, take sound rest and non-aspirin medicine and hospitalised if fever is high. Take certain
precautions while travelling in dengue prone countries.

Passage: Proper collection and destruction of solid waste is very important for the overall health of
urban citizens. Indian cities generate about 80,000 tons of solid waste everyday. It is very hard that none
of the cities in the country collects and destroys its waste in safe way. About 60% of India’s solid waste
consist of biodegradable organic wastes. It originates from kitchens and markets. By using earthworms
this solid waste can be turned into rich organic manure. This is an eco-friendly way of making manure.
Earthworms play a key role in soil biology by serving as a natural agent. They convert organic wastes into
valuable organic manure. Earthworms improve the soil texture and soil aeration. They enrich the soil

Summary:
Solid Waste and Health
About 80,000 tons of solid waste is generated in cities everyday; but it is not collected and destroyed
regularly. Most of the solid wastes originate in kitchens and markets. Out of it 60’s is biodegradable
organic waste. We can turn this waste into rich organic manure by using earthworms; eco-friendly way.
They enrich the qualities of soil and help the growth of plants.

Passage: To stop the ruthless cutting of trees in the Himalayas, a unique movement – Chipko was started.
The word Chipko means to ‘hug’ or to ‘embrace’ in Hindi. The movement derived its name from the
dramatic circumstances in which it was born. In March 1973, when tree fellers arrived in Mandal village
of Uttar Pradesh to cut trees, they found that hundreds of women had gathered there. They protected the
tree-felling and clung to the trees literally embracing them to save them from the axes. The non-violent
protest worked and the trees were saved. From that day Chipko has become an important word in the
dictionary of environmentalists activist of Tehri actively supported it. He and his volunteers travelled on
foot from village to village to educate and involved the local people on the urgent need of forest
conservation. ‘Our blue-print is not only for the saving of the trees but for the survival of mankind,” said
Bahuguna. Similar to the Chipko movement is the Appico (meaning ‘to hug’ in Kannada) movement
started in Karnataka. The movements motivated many other activities to fight against tree-felling.

Summary: Chipko Movement – A step towards protection of forests
When the people in the Himalayas realised the trees are cut down unnecessarily they hugged the trees
and risked their lives to save them. The incident in Mandal village in Uttar Pradesh was an eye-opener for
all of us. The women stopped the tree fellers by hugging the trees. It was a good initiative taken by the
women to save trees and protect forest risking their own lives. Sunderlal Bahuguna an environmental
activist of Tehri supported the movement. Along with his activities he travelled from village to village to
counsel the villagers about the importance of forest and bad effects of tree felling on environment.

Passage: For eight years, Dr. Kalam let a team of 500 experts in TIFAC and evolved Technology Vision
2020. Later, the Technology Vision 2020 and national security aspects got combined into Indian
Millennium Mission 2020 (IMM 2020). It aimed at transforming India from a developing to t a developed
nation by 2020. As the Principal Scientific Adviser, Dr. Abdul Kalam focused on evolving a plan for
implementing IMM 2020. The marathon meetings he held with his colleagues helped to achieve a
consensus on the importance of each branch of science in improving the various sectors and thereby
contributing to the welfare of the nation. But, initially, the focus would be on five sectors. These were
agriculture, power, education and healthcare, information technology and the strategic sector. Dr. Kalam
felt that emphasis on these five areas would help in transforming India into a developed nation by 2020.
