Persuasive Speech Outline Andres Garcia 4/12/2018 Intro – Imagine, you’re 18 years old, it’s your first year of college, you’re getting to know a new place, meeting new people, you’re enrolled in 15 credits and trying to learn how to balance out your time with school and your social life. An average student enrolled in college courses spends about 3 hours per credit hour on school work a week, that means an 18-year-old student who is just getting to college and learning about this new environment and about how to take care of himself without his parents around is spending between 36 and 45 hours a week on school work, and that does not include the hours spent in class. That can get a bit overwhelming to say the least, but now, imagine being a student athlete, and on top of all of that, you are spending about 20 hours a week at practice, games, weightlifting or team events. Start – Now lastly imagine not being financial stable to pay for living expenses and your parents not being able to constantly give you the money you may need to be in college. How are you supposed to work and make money if you’re already spending 56 to 66 hours a week on school, practices and games. Some may argue that these students shouldn’t play a sport in college if their parents or they aren’t financial stable to support themselves, but isn’t it our job to support higher education to our children at all costs? Yes, there are scholarships, yes there is financial aid and loans but sometimes that just isn’t enough. These days college tuition rates are to the roof and living expenses can get very pricy. And for a lot of these young athletes, their sport is their ticket into college, so how is it fair to ask them to pay for all of that and get good grades, get a job and have to play a sport? That’s more work than what the average adult has to do at their job, but the difference is that these student athletes do not get paid for putting in all of those hours of hard work. They have to do what every other student does; attend classes and constantly catch up on school work but they also sacrifice their time and put in hard work to be successful in the sport they play. They win games, win championship, and win titles for their colleges and instead of getting paid for it they drown in debt before they even get to finish their degree. So how do we fix it? (The ___________ Act) This requires all public colleges to pay their student athletes a minimum of $___ an hour (or semester if you want) for every hour they spend in training, events and games. That’s all I’ve got so Finish the last few paragraphs with explaining more terms for it (make some up cause you’re supposed to be selling this) and then go into how it benefits them to do this (higher graduation rates, better chances of winning titles, etc) Have your PowerPoint follow what you’re saying so you’re probably going to have to change it a bit. In the beginning you can show stats and graphs of how many hours students spend in school work and stuff like that. A slide could literally be just a picture to make your point.
