What is Theatre? Theater - is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers typically actors or actresses, to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture, speech, song, music, and dance. Elements of arts, such as painted scenery and stage craft such as lighting are used to enhance the physicality, presence and immediacy of the experience. Trumpets PETA-Philippine Educational Theater Association -more than a theater company; it is an innovative theater group cultivating a modern perspective on Philippine art and society. - It moves toward issue-based theater and helps bring about social and political awareness and change through its programs, performances, and workshops. Cecile Guidote-Alvarez founded the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) on April 7, 1967 with the vision of a Philippine Theater engaged in the development of people and society. Comedy is an entertainment consisting of jokes intended to make an audience laugh. It is a form of dramatic construction enlists and rates mounting happening of the world with a humorous player or even eccentric flavors. There are different types of comedy these are : • Comedy of manners • Romantic Comedy • Black Comedy/Dark Comedy • Comedy of Humors • Tragic Comedy Comedy of Manner- the plays are satire/exaggerated they poke fun at society, especially the upper class. Lust, greed, materialistic nature of people, gossip and rumours, hypocritical nature and false pretensions of the people were common subjects of the comedy of manners. Romantic Comedy- centers around the theme of love and this usually has a happy ending two characters meet and begin a love affair but misunderstandings and other impediments get in the way that is merely metaphysical speculation and as with most metaphysical speculations they have very little reference to the actual facts of life as we know them. Black Comedy /Dark Comedy- The topic in this type of comedy are distressing to people such as death illness and other taboo topics Comedy of Humor- The comedy of humors is a character-based story in this type of comedy the characters have one or two dominant traits such as jealousy ,greed or vanity that through their interactions with each other . Tragic Comedy- mixes humor and tragedy together in surprising ways most tragic comedies feature surprise endings and almost all endings are happy. 2.Tragedy is a form of drama based on human suffering and ,mainly, the terrible or sorrowful events that befall the main character. Six elements of tragedy theatrical : 1. Plot 2. Character 3. Diction 4. Thought 5. Spectacle ( scenic effect) 6. It is a classic tale of crime and punishment injustice and redemption 3.Drama- is a prose or poetical composition presenting a story of human life through the performance of actors and actresses. Six elements of Drama: 1. Plot 2. Theme 3. Characters 4. Dialogue 5. Music/Rhythm and sound 6. Spectacle Himala is and excerpt from a stage play himala by Tanhalang Pilipino in 2004 . “Himala” tells the story of Cupang , a rural barrio in barren landscape cursed with drought. A glimmer of hope appears in Elsa, a young girl who claims to have the power to heal after seeing a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. 4.Melodrama- is a work with exaggerated, sensational events and characters. It is highly emotional, focusing on exciting but over-thetop situations that are designed to encourage emotional responses in the audience. Elements of Melodrama: 1. Music 2. Morally polarized characters/Good Guys vs. Bad guys. 3. Heroine/ Damsel in distress who must be save by the hero. 4. Happy Ending/Good has to win over bad. This includes incorporating appropriate movement and dance styles needed in the play.
