The Teacher as a Curricularist Answer the following: 1. Compare and contrast the Relevance of 21 st Century Education from 21st skills categories. Every era has its own set of demands for its people. The 21st century is an era of great opportunities and innovations, a time that caused a significant shift in the educational system. Survival strategies are not enough to survive in this world. Children must learn skills for them to be able to solve real-life challenges. There is a significant transformation in education from traditional teaching and learning, a shift to 21st-century education that will necessarily involve special skills. Schools now will prepare them to master every aspect of life, from life skills to digital skills, and reach their fullest potential. The 21st Century Education is an education that gives students the knowledge and skills they need to grow and succeed in today's world. A 21st-century education responds to the fast-changing economic, technological, and societal developments that reflect the changing world. Schools make a new way of designing curriculums, a curriculum for life that would engage students with human development and adapt to the changes. Teachers will not only provide information. Teachers will also facilitate learning and assist students in understanding, experiencing, and applying their knowledge. 21st Century Skills are essential skills for success in today's world. These skills include learning and innovation skills, information media and technology skills, and life and career skills. Students must learn such skills while in school to succeed in their professions in the future. As future educators, we should then realize that this will help us improve our skills, attitudes, and trust in ourselves. Since schools have shifted to a better educational system, we, as pre-service teachers, are expected to play an active role in developing and organizing high-quality content and instruction for our students. What are the critical attributes of 21st Century education? Explain them. 2. Describe a 21st Century teacher and discuss some innovative tools for learning. 3. Explain how you can integrate 21 st century education in the curriculum. ANSWERS: 1. To meet the demands of 21st-century education, educational institutions must address eight critical characteristics. First, Integrated and Interdisciplinary. This simply means bridging connections between academic and practical knowledge. This method can help students become more aware of the meaningful connections that exist between different subject areas. Second, Technologies and Multimedia. ICT in the classroom provides students with access to countless online resources and provides educators with a variety of tools to facilitate learning and assist their students in developing a better understanding of the material. Third, Global Classrooms. Global classrooms expose students to international and multicultural experiences, which improves their academic performance. It helps to raise awareness about a variety of subjects while also nurturing the student's overall personality. Fourth, Creating/Adapting to Constant Personal and Social Change and Lifelong Learning. Schools should recognize that humans have a natural desire to explore, learn and grow. Students should be encouraged to focus on the ideas and goals that inspire and motivate them. Learning is beyond the classroom, we should continue learning to improve our own quality of life and sense of self-worth. Page 3 of 12 Republic of the Philippines CENTRAL BICOL STATE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE ISO 9001:2015 TÜV-R 01 100 1934918 San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur 4418 www.cbsua.edu.ph Fifth, Student-Centered. Through a student-centered instructional approach, students are given responsibility and independence. Cooperative learning has replaced traditional classroom instruction as the new standard. This helps in the development of characteristics of lifelong learners such as motivation, self-evaluation and time management. Sixth, 21st Century Skills. To learn 21st-century skills are very important if we want to prepare our future generation for success in school, work, and life. They not only provide a basis for successful classroom learning, but they also ensure students' and teachers’ ability to succeed in a world where change is constant and learning never stops. Seventh, Project-Based and Research- Driven. Students initiate their own learning through inquiry and work collaboratively to conduct research and create projects that reflect their knowledge. A project-based approach to learning can assist educators in engaging students in deep thinking about content while also teaching critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. Eight, Relevant, Rigorous and Real World. Relevance helps students understand the importance of what they are learning, and rigor ensures that they are challenged to develop advanced skills and knowledge. These are also important for equity because they ensure that all students have access to high-level content and skills. Relevance in education can help students realize the value of all knowledge. 2. A 21st Century teacher and some innovative tools for learning. 21st Century Teacher 21st Century education implies challenges among teachers in the way they need to embrace technological advancements and instructional innovations. Teachers should be multiliterate, multispecialist, multiskilled, self- directed, lifelong learners, flexible, creative problem solver, critical thinker, emotionally intelligent and passionate for excellent teaching. Teachers, as the primarily organizers of 21st century education, must be intensively trained in these skills to prepare them for their future professional career roles. This puts the 21st-century teacher in a critical position because they have to master constantly evolving technology and digital learning tools—tools that their students use every day. The effective use of digital learning tools in the classroom can boost student engagement, support teachers in enhancing lesson plans, and empower personalized learning. It also helps students develop important 21st-century skills. Cloud-based learning software, apps, blogs or discussion boards, digital whiteboards, and other interactive online tools for students and teachers are some examples of 21st Century Innovative Tools. Another example is Google + Communities. Cloud-based communities can be as open or closed as you prefer and are accessible through any smartphone or mobile device. In a social media setting, educators can share documents, publish videos, socialize project-based learning artifacts, communicate with colleagues, send messages, participate in threaded discussions, and interact with families and community members. Teachers can also open or close groups, giving them control over the transparency of data and interaction. One more example is YouTube. YouTube Channels, by far the most consistently underappreciated digital learning tool we see, have transformed YouTube into a serious distribution tool for any type of content—academic or not. In such a way that important academic concepts like blended learning and the Khan Academy are literally built around it. YouTube is capable of providing self-directed learning, educational classroom discussions, full-on test, and accurate project-based learning. YouTube is really a great example and it deserves a spot in any 21st-century classroom. Page 5 of 12 Republic of the Philippines CENTRAL BICOL STATE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE ISO 9001:2015 TÜV-R 01 100 1934918 San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur 4418 www.cbsua.edu.ph 3. Integration of 21st century education in the curriculum. The integration of 21st-century skills must be practiced continuously across standards and assessments, learning environments, instructions, and the curriculum. The curriculum emphasizes team-based projects in which groups solve problems by maximizing each individual's strengths. This will expose students to new ideas and opposing viewpoints while demonstrating the power of the collective mind. Curriculums should be enhanced and modified to meet the needs of 21st-century learners. Educators must keep up with the latest developments and current trends to provide the most up-to-date education for their students. Schools can try to integrate 21st-century education into their curriculum by using technology in the classroom, teaching critical thinking skills, and providing more project-based learning experiences. Moreover, schools should emphasize the importance of teaching students skills that will be useful in today's world. Another approach to integrating 21st-century education into the curriculum is to highlight critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Teachers can support students in developing these skills by requiring them to analyze and critique current events, debate important topics, and solve real-world problems. Teachers could also start encouraging students to be self-directed learners by giving opportunities for them to research and explore topics of interest to them. Students develop the capacity to be self-directed learners who can think critically about their education when they are given more independence over what they learn and how they approach a topic. As a result, students will learn 21st-century skills which will help them succeed in the future. Discuss the relevance of Information Technology, Media Literacy, Technology Literacy and Life and Career Skills. 2. Describe the categories of 21s Century skills. 3. How can the attainment of 21st century skill contributed to the realization of educational goals? 4. How can you integrate 21st Century skills in the teaching-learning process? 1. Relevance of Information Technology, Media Literacy, Technology Literacy and Life and Career Skills. For students to succeed in today's modern world, these 21st-century skills must be taught in school. The concept of 21st Century skills is based on the belief that students must be educated in a more relevant, useful, in-demand, and universityrelevant manner. The concept is simple: students must be taught different skills and reflect on the specific demands that will be placed on them in a complex, competitive, knowledge-based, information-age, and technology-driven society. Information Media Literacy enables people to show and make intelligent decisions as users of information and media, as well as to become skilled creators and producers of information and media communications in their own right. Teaching media literacy helps students learn skills that will enable them to think critically concerning media. It also enhances 21st-century skills as well as increasing digital literacy through interaction with media, information, and technology. It encourages inclusion and the growth of digital literacy skills. It extends learning beyond the text - and beyond the four walls of the classroom. Students and teachers are eventually exposed to new international communities. As a result, global awareness is promoted, which is an essential component of a 21st-century education. Page 7 of 12 Republic of the Philippines CENTRAL BICOL STATE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE ISO 9001:2015 TÜV-R 01 100 1934918 San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur 4418 www.cbsua.edu.ph 2. Categories of 21st Century Skills The skills of the 21st century are categorized into different skills of desired outcomes. Firstly, Learning and Innovation Skills. These are valuable skills because they allow educators and learners to solve problems and advance their knowledge. Investing in their own innovation abilities can help them become a competitive candidate for top positions and broaden their horizons. Secondly, Information, Media, and Technology Skills. These skills are very relevant. In schools and colleges, information and communication technology (ICT) gives learners with interactive and collaborative, learning techniques which increase their independence and participation in the learning process while also increasing their levels of technological competence and computer skills. Thirdly, Life and Career Skills. These skills are needed for being a 21st Century learner or educator. Today’s modern life and work settings require more than just critical thinking and content knowledge. Students must focus their efforts on developing better life and career skills to explore the complicated work and social environments of the globally competitive digital world. 3. Attainment of 21st century skills and its contribution to the realization of educational goals This is the century to put all of your educational studies to use because there are opportunities in every field. Furthermore, because there are so many opportunities in this century, we can shift our education system to a skill-based system. Education in life skills enables an individual to improve the knowledge, develop values, and views, implying that the individual understands when and how to perform a task. Leadership, teamwork, collaboration, cooperation and all the other literacies mentioned above are useful skills that can be contributed in the 21 st century education. Page 8 of 12 Republic of the Philippines CENTRAL BICOL STATE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE ISO 9001:2015 TÜV-R 01 100 1934918 San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur 4418 www.cbsua.edu.ph 4. Integration of 21st Century skills in the teaching-learning process 21st-century education identifies opportunities for teachers to incorporate 21st-century skills, tools, and teaching strategies into their classroom practice and assists them in determining which activities to replace or emphasize. It helps teachers recognize their students' learning styles, intelligences, strengths, and weaknesses. This assists teacher in developing their abilities to reach out to diverse students and create environments that support differentiated teaching and learning. 21st-century learning fosters practices that enable educators to collaborate, share best practices, and integrate 21st-century skills into classroom practice. It allows students to learn in relevant, real-world contexts in the twenty-first century. Teachers are successfully complementing content with technology and developing the ability to use technology creatively to meet specific needs. To evaluate student performance, educators employ a variety of assessment strategies. Teachers in the twenty-first century actively participate in learning communities, utilizing school expertise through coaching, mentoring, knowledgesharing, and team teaching. They serve as mentors and peer coaches to other educators. They employ a variety of strategies to foster inclusive teaching and learning environments. Most importantly, teachers seek out opportunities for continuous learning and embrace career-long learning, creating a beneficial learning environment in which students can freely express themselves and explore their skills and potential. Page 9 of 12 Republic of the Philippines CENTRAL BICOL STATE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE ISO 9001:2015 TÜV-R 01 100 1934918 WEEK 5 San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur 4418 www.cbsua.edu.ph New Literacies, Functional Literacy and Multi- Literacy PRE-COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT 1. Discuss new literacies and their impact on the teaching-learning process. 2. Describe a multi-literate teacher. 3. Define functional literacy. 1. New literacies and their impact on the teaching-learning process. Literacy has changed and evolved through time based on societal needs. New literacies are not limited to knowing how to read and write; they are also about applying knowledge for specific purposes in specific contexts. These new literacies create opportunities for students to understand and apply new knowledge and skills while experimenting with different teaching and learning tools. The curriculum for the twenty-first century emphasizes seven new literacies. Namely: Multicultural, Social, Media, Financial, Digital, Ecological and Creative Literacy. In today's schools, students should learn the most relevant, practical, and indemand skills that reflect the specific demands of this complex, competitive, and technologically driven society. Teachers may advocate for the teaching of crossdisciplinary skills, whereas schools may require 21st-century skills in both the instructional and assessment processes. Schools and teachers may use educational approaches designed to speed up or ease the acquisition of cross-disciplinary skills. Integration of new literacies and teaching multiliteracies open up new possibilities for future teachers and learners. It can assist students in ensuring that all students have equal access to learning. As a result, students learn to collaborate by sharing their ideas with others in online spaces where they can engage in various modes of learning. As a result of this new literacy integration in the curriculum for teacher education, students will become more confident and knowledgeable in learning through participatory and collaborative practices. Page 10 of 12 Republic of the Philippines CENTRAL BICOL STATE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE ISO 9001:2015 TÜV-R 01 100 1934918 San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur 4418 www.cbsua.edu.ph Students must become competent in the new literacies of the 21st century. Schools must assist teachers by providing professional development and the latest technology for use in the classroom. The success of new literacies relies on critical thinking and reflection. Teachers should have strong technical skills that can provide more beneficial instruction to help students seek information and gain a deeper understanding of today's modern complex world. 2. Multi-literate Teacher An effective multiliterate teacher uses a diverse approach to guide students in understanding how to access, evaluate, synthesize, and contribute meaningfully to society. Multiliterate teachers encourage students to try new learning methods and provide them with consistent access to technology. Educators should not only understand the tools itself, but also the methods and strategies for using them. Many teachers become focused on the tool itself, rather than seeing these technologies as a form of communication, a portal used t collaborate and motivate learners. Life is interconnected but this fact is usually neglected. Nevertheless, multiliterate teachers are aware of the risks associated with technology. Teachers should spend time thinking about giving students power tools without contemplating how to use them in the safest way possible while still providing the most learning and the most powerful results. Similarly, no educator would set up a classroom without first considering how the curriculum learning objectives would be integrated with the activity and how the cooperating learning groups would be arranged. Before providing the information to the students, a 21st Century teacher must first use these tools for their own self-improvement. We cannot offer anything that we do not have. Educators in the 21st century must learn how to manage a large amount of data available. They must shift their focus away from content memorization and more towards production and distribution - making available what is most applicable as pieces for the design and concepts of content and ideas. Sort, Page 11 of 12 Republic of the Philippines CENTRAL BICOL STATE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE ISO 9001:2015 TÜV-R 01 100 1934918 San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur 4418 www.cbsua.edu.ph organize, chunk, and provide pieces of information for students to use to build knowledge around the objectives we are intending to teach. We should allow them to build and grow together. Teachers in the 21st century must make fundamental changes in their thinking and content delivery. Educational leaders in the 21st century must have a clear understanding of the evolving learning framework demanded by living in the digital age. The 21st century has arrived, and these kids can't wait. It is time for teachers to begin using these tools as professionals, for critical engagement with content and establishing collaborative partnerships in our student's education and school reform. 3. Functional Literacy Functional literacy's simple meaning is to enhance and develop knowledge and skills and use them in real life. It educates people on the essential skills they need to find work and manage their daily lives. However, functional literacy is about much more than just getting a job. It is also about preserving skills that our entire society requires to function. We will not have functioning businesses, governments, or communities unless we have individuals with mathematical knowledge, reading and writing skills, or analytical abilities. Functional literacy is essential to the operation of our high-tech society. In other words, “a functional society requires functional literacy". Functional literacy is mainly concerned with skills or applied knowledge and is highly relevant to today’s complex, technological society. Thus, functional literacy programs should be implemented to focus on various job skills and development aspects. For example in agricultural, health, industry, and technical-vocational programs. Furthermore, literacy must be an integral part of each country's overall educational system and plan. Literacy programs must teach not only reading and writing skills but also professional and technical knowledge, resulting in increased participation of individuals for the benefit of their own and our nation.
