Notes for LOUISA JANE SCOTT:
Note: the marriage record for her first marriage which occurred before her
14th birthday by two months, indicates that the groom was Samuel H. Darr.
This marriage record was found by Edwin Hamblin in the Virginia State
Library in Richmond and it is also recorded in the book "Early Eastern
Tennessee Marriages." The name, "Sanhedrin" comes from the 1850 census
record and the 1860 census record shows him living with Louisa Jane in his
mother's home, but his name is "San Ledron Darr." Family history and
tradition had always listed him as Sam H. Darr or S. H. Darr, so what his
real name is actually, is up for debate.

Notes for LILLIE O'CORA CORRELL:
They were married at the Geoge Valentine Corell residence by J. W.
Rumburg.
In Keystone, McDowell County, West Virginia, the family bought the
big two story home (which is still standing in 1999) immediately
to the south of the First Baptist Church, where she ran a boarding
and rooming house for railroaders. She had eight children of her
own and my mother told of how they had to eat in shifts with the
table being filled with people at least three or four times each
meal.
The second building south of this home was the old Jewish
Synagogue, and the Hamblin children, who were of strict Baptist
upbringing, used to delight in watching the Rabbi make the kosher
meats in the butcher yard behind the building. The Hamblin boys
helped with that chore from time to time.
She is buried next to her husband in Monte Vista Cemetery, Green
Valley, Mercer County, West Virginia, where two adult daughters
also rest in the four grave plot.

Georgia Ballas Hamblin was cremated and her ashes placed in a

The relationship with Mackerness Hamblin is not proved by will
or other legal document. What is available are marriage
records of the sons and daughters of Mackerness Hamblin and
wife, Mary. As of July 1996, our relationship to Mackerness
Hamblin is probably based on those marriage records, census
records, and logic.
The name Mackerness comes from Lady Mackerness who married
John Goode in Barbados in 1650. Their grandson, Mackerness
Goode, born about 1700 was the first of three generations of
Mackerness Goodes in Southside Virginia from about 1700 to
1815. The Hamblins and Goodes were very close, and probably
related with Mackerness Hamblin's mother, likely being a
Goode.
Callihan Hamblin, the proven older brother of our documented
ancestor Smith T. Hamblin stated in a county history of St.
Clair County, Virginia, and was an Englishman. Research
indicates there were only 2 "M" Hamblins in the southern
colonies at this time, Maddox Hamblin of Maryland, and
Mackerness Hamblin of Virginia. Based on tax records, it is
likely that Mackerness Hamblin died in early 1815 in Franklin
County. Callihan Hamblin was not born until 1824, so any
information he had of his grandfather was passed to him by his
father, Thomas Hamblin. One of Mackerness Hamblin's sons,
Stephen Hamblin, did live in Giles County, Virginia, for a
period of time. In my research, I uncovered no evidence that
Mackerness ever lived in Giles County. At this time, evidence
points to Mackerness Hamblin as a direct descendant of Captain
Stephen Hamblyn, and Englishman who settled in Virginia around
1655.
The thing that makes it nearly impossible to prove who
Mackerness Hamblin was is that the area of Virginia where he
lived was known as the Southside (south of the James River).
During the Civil War, the southside county records which had
been moved to Richmond for safekee ping were destroyed. No
records may exist today that can prove the relationshi p to
Mackerness Hamblin and his ancestors, I can only use what is
available. It would be much easier if there were only one
Thomas Hamblin to deal with, but besides our ancestor Thomas
Hamblin, it is likely that Mackerness also had a brother
Thomas, and that his father's name was Thomas.
To date, the first record of Mackerness Hamblin is in the
Chesterfield County tax records in 1762, tithed with the
family of George Coussens. In 1764, he is shown on the
Lunenburg County (Cornwall Parish) tax rolls as tithable
(taxable), no land, no carriages, no other family males (males
became taxable at the age of 16, which would put Mackerness'
birth at 1748, or earlier). It is likely that he was living on
land owned by brother, Peter. There is a listing for Petter
(Peter) Hamblen further down the page on the same tax record.
A very careful examination of the tax records show a family
unit of Thomas Hamblin/Mackerness Goode living in Lunenburg
County in 1750. It identifies them as living between Sandy
Creek and Bluestone Creek. A birth entry in church records,
identifies Thomas Hamblin and wife Phebe as parents of Peter
Hamblin (born 1732). In 1764 the record shows Peter Hamblen
and Mackerness Hamblin living in the same area of Lunenburg
County that Thomas Hamblin and Mackerness Goode had been
living in 14 years earlier. This information is the proof that
indicates Thomas Hamblin as the father of Mackerness Hamblin,
and solidifies the link between Mack and Peter Hamblin . Over
the following years, the tax rolls never indicate Mackerness
as owning property, so I believe he was living on Peter's
land. (I have a record showing Peter Hamblin owning an
'ordinary' which was another word for inn or tavern - I would
say it is likely that Mackerness and his wife ran the tavern
for his brother...his brother had interests in other
counties). In 1788, it is indicated that Peter moved to
Halifax County, but continued
