A 21st century education is about giving students the skills they need to succeed in this new world and helping them grow the confidence to practice those skills. With so much information readily available to them, 21st century skills focus more on making sense of that information, sharing and using it in smart ways. CHARACTERISTICS ST OF A 21 CENTURY CLASSROOM CHANGES IN THE CLASSROOM Studentcentered Teachers as facilitators Learning and Doing Collaborative Interdisciplinary Multiple sources of information including technology Flexible Grouping configuration based on individual student needs Higher Order Thinking Skills Performancebased Assessments To prepare students to become productive members of the workplace. ST 21 ● ● ● ● ● CENTURY TEACHER Act as a facilitator Establish a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment for all students Plan for the long-term and short-term. Foster cooperation among students within the classroom Encourage students’ curiosity and intrinsic motivation to learn ST 21 ● ● ● ● ● CENTURY TEACHER Make students feel valued Communicate effectively with others Use language to foster self-expression, identity development, and learning in her students Listen thoughtfully and responsively Foster cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity in her students What do we need to make the 21st century education? ● We need to create personalized lessons, be inclusive, aim for equality, encourage creativity, engage with the community, use technology to enhance learning, and more! To ensure students get the best learning possible, teachers in the 21st Century need ongoing training and support. CONCLUSION ● ● ● If students are to be productive members of the 21st Century workplace, they must move beyond the skills of the 20th Century and master those of the 21st Century. Teachers are entrusted with mastering skills as well and with modeling these skills in the classroom. The characteristics of the 21st century classroom will be very different from those of in the classrooms of the past because the focus is on producing students who are highly productive, effective communicators, inventive thinkers, and master of technology.
