UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SYDNEY Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology School of Professional Practice and Leadership 48250 Economics and Finance for Engineering Projects Spring 2022 Assignment 1: Project Identification (15%) Due date: Week3 (for submitting a report) and week4 (posting comments on the three other student's projects, reflecting on provided comments by peers and forming a group) Assessment Intent: Most of the time, engineers first become involved in a project's feasibility alongside its design stages – well after the most important strategic decisions have been made. These strategic decisions will determine the nature of a project and constrain the engineers to micro-decisions that will often have only a marginal effect on the project's benefit or cost. To this end, you require to identify an engineering economic problems of a contemporary engineering project from publicly available sources. General Instruction: • This assignment is an individual task. • Assignment task1 is the foundation of the other assignments in this subject. It is expected that students spend enough time preparing for this task. • Assignment worth: 15% of the total subject mark • Submission Due: ❖ Week3: Submitting a report ❖ Week4: Attend the week4 tutorial (attendance is required), Post comments on the three other student's projects and reflect on provided comments by peers and form a group. • A late submission penalty will be imposed as per the Subject Outline. 1 Tasks This assessment is divided into four main tasks: Task1: You are required to identify an engineering project from an engineering company perspective (Not a Governmental viewpoint), review it and respond to the requirements explained in the details related to Task1 (Due week3). Task2: After you submit your report in the discussion space in the canvas (instruction provided in the “how to submit” section), you need to post comments on three other students’ projects (Due Tutorial week4). Task3: After you receive comments from your peers, you require to reflect on their comments (Due Tutorial Week4) Task4: Based on your interest, you are required to add yourself to a group on the “People” section on the Canvas. The selected group will be your permanent group for the rest of the term (Due week4). Note: To succeed in this subject, you must spend enough time on this Assessment and carefully explore the selected project. Specific Instructions for Tasks How to identify Private Engineering Project: An engineering Project refers to any plan or construction of new work with an engineering nature and specific alternations to address all clients' or stakeholders' needs. You need to select a private company that runs the engineering project for this assignment. You can search for any engineering company in the area that you are interested in and find out about the projects that currently are running and are Not being completed. Some of the good websites which could help you to find the current projects are: • A list of Australia’s Transport Projects • Infrastructure Australia • Current Major Projects The above-suggested list is just a sample. Based on your interest, you can select any privet project with an engineering nature. Task1: In this task, you require to (Due week3): • review the contents from publicly available information on engineering companies or engineering projects from your professional field of practice. • Select an engineering project that is interesting, exciting, and challenging based on your review. Make sure that the selected project is run by an engineering company • Identify an engineering-economic problem associated with your chosen project using one of the following categories: (1) new products or product expansion, (2) equipment and process selection, (3) cost reduction, (4) equipment replacement, or (5) service/quality improvement. • Post your response in the reply by providing a brief description that contains the following points (maximum 300 words): 2 o o o the company or business that will operate the project (i.e., what is the company and where?) the project (i.e., what is the project and what engineering-economic problem it is associated with?) the reason you select this project (e.g., why this project is interesting, how it could benefit the business in question) Task2: In this task, you require to (Due Tutorial week4) comment meaningfully on the other three students’ projects (response) that you also find interesting, exciting, and challenging. In your comment, you need to consider the below requirements (maximum 180 words for all three comments): • You will only be able to view other student responses once you have posted yours. • Your feedback should be as specific as possible. • You should identify and reinforce the strengths of the project • You should provide information about how they can improve • You should focus on any missing information or any misunderstanding (if needed) • You should use non-judgmental language • You can use the below document to understand what constructive feedback is: Giving and Receiving Feedback Each post must not receive more than 3 comments. You must attend the tutorial on week4 to do this task. This task is crucial for you as it can help select the right group members to work for the rest of the semester for the other assessments. Task3: In this task, you require to (Due Tutorial week4) reflect on the comments received from your peers. You need to answer any issues that they mentioned in their feedback. you need to consider the below requirements (maximum 120 words for all comments): • • • • Your reflection must be as specific as possible You should answer any questions from your peers You should use non-judgmental language You can use the below document to reflect on the comments received from your peers: Giving and Receiving Feedback Task4: In this task, you require to (Due week4) allocate yourself to a group. You will stay in this group permanently and do all the tutorial activities, Assignments 2 and 3 together. • • To allocate yourself to the group, you need to use the “People” tab on the canvas and choose your tutorial section. A group consists of 5 people from the same tutorial section 3 • If you need help, you can always ask your tutor to allocate or help you for finding a suitable group How to submit Tasks 1,2 and 3: You require to go to the Assignment1 page on the canvas and click “reply” below the section. Then you can post your project information (task1) and comment or reflect (tasks2 and 3). The below images show you the step that you need to take: Assignment Format Submission: Length: Font size: Referencing: Soft copy only in Canvas 600 words max (+ or – 10%) 12pt (min) Use APA referencing (See Referencing in the UTS Library website) Marking Criteria Criteria Project is clearly described/identified A problem that the project is associated with is well defined The reason why the project is selected is clearly described Provide three comments to other students’ project The provided comments are meaningful and well explained Presentation of the work and the organization of report and comments 4 Points 2 3 2 1 3 1 The reflection on the three comments is meaningful and well explained 5 3
