Key Concepts Passive and Active Voice The voice of an action verb indicates whether the subject performs or receives the action. There are two types of voice: Active Voice and Passive Voice Active Voice -when the subject does or “acts upon” the verb, the sentence is said to be in the active voice. Formula: Subject + Verb + Object (doer of the action) (the action) (receiver of the action) The following examples show that the subject is doing the verb’s actions. 1. The chef cooks a special food. Name of writer: Maristela (subject) (verb) D. Antigro (object) School/Station: Capalayan National High School Division: Surigao City Email Address: maristela.dom@deped.gov.ph 1 2. Carlos Bulosan (subject) 3. The judge (subject) revealed (verb) pounded (verb) the reality about social discrimination in the text. (object) the gavel. (object) Passive Voice -when the subject receives the action of the verb, the sentence is said to be in the passive voice. Formula: Subject + Verb+ Object (receiver of the action) These examples show how the subject-verb relationship has changed. 1. A special food (subject) is cooked (verb) by the chef (object). (active verb-gives: passive verb-is given) 2. The reality about social discrimination in the text (subject) was revealed (verb) by Carlos Bulosan (object). (active verb-revealed: passive verb- was revealed) 3. The gavel (subject) was pounded (verb) by the judge (object). (active verb- pounded: passive verb- was pounded) 4. A small change in a straw hat (subject) was thrown (verb) by my brothers (object). (active verb-threw: passive verb-was thrown) The object in the active voice becomes the subject in the passive voice; the subject in the active voice becomes the object in the passive voice. Tips in Changing Active to Passive: 1. Identify tenses of verb and change it into Verb Be+ Past Participle Tense Active: Passive: Active: Passive: Active: Passive: The government gives relief goods. Relief goods are given by the government. Many boys helped the wounded men. Wounded men were helped by many boys. Someone will take my gadgets. My gadgets will be taken by someone. 2. Move the direct object to the beginning of the sentence Active: Arthur will send a package. Passive: A package will be sent by Arthur. Name of writer: Maristela D. Antigro School/Station: Capalayan National High School Division: Surigao City 2 Email Address: maristela.dom@deped.gov.ph Active: Sheena will bring imported goods. Passive: Imported goods will be brought by Sheena. 3. Add the preposition “by” before the subject Active: Heshbon will write a letter. Passive: A letter will be written by Heshbon. 4. Add an auxiliary verb “be” before the main verb Chart in changing the voice of a sentence depending on the tense of a verb. Tense Present Simple Present Continuous Past Simple Past Continuous Present Perfect Past Perfect Future Simple Infinitive Modals Active Reporters write news reports. Michael is baking a brownie. The company hired new workers last year. The salesman was helping the customer when the thief came into the store. They have already bought the book. He had delivered the letters. The company will hire new workers. She has to deliver the letters. She must attend the meeting. Name of writer: Maristela D. Antigro School/Station: Capalayan National High School Division: Surigao City Email Address: maristela.dom@deped.gov.ph 3 Passive News reports are written by reporters. A brownie is being baked by Michael. New workers were hired by the company last year. The customer was being helped by the salesman when the thief came into the store. The book has already been bought by them. The letters had been delivered by him. New workers will be hired by the company. The letters have to be delivered by her. The meeting must be attended by her. Changing Passive Voice to Active Voice To change passive voice to active voice, make the object of the sentence into the subject, and turn the old subject as the object. For example, this is a passive sentence: “The article is being read by most of my class.” The object is most of my class, and the subject is the article. Written in the active voice, this sentence would be “Most of my class is reading the article.” Here, the new subject is most of my class and the object is the article. Examples: Passive: Relief goods are given by the official. Active: The official gives relief goods. Passive: Wounded men were helped by many boys. Active: Many boys helped the wounded men. Passive: My gadgets will be taken by someone. Active: Someone will take my gadgets. III. Guided Practice Activity 1: Describe Me! Directions: Describe each picture using active and passive voice.
