II. Key Concepts
Passive and Active Voice
The voice of an action verb indicates whether the subject performs or receives the
action.
There are two types of voice: Active Voice and Passive Voice
Active Voice -when the subject does or “acts upon” the verb, the sentence is said
to be in the active voice.
Formula: Subject
+ Verb
+ Object
(doer of the action) (the action) (receiver of the action)
The following examples show that the subject is doing the verb’s actions.
1. The chef
cooks a special food.
Name
of
writer:
Maristela
(subject)
(verb) D. Antigro
(object)

(subject)
3. The
judge
(subject)
revealed
(verb)
pounded
(verb)
the reality about social discrimination in the text.
(object)
the
gavel.
(object)
Passive Voice -when the subject receives the action of the verb, the sentence is
said to be in the passive voice.
Formula: Subject + Verb+ Object
(receiver of the action)
These examples show how the subject-verb relationship has changed.
1. A special food (subject) is cooked (verb) by the chef (object).
(active verb-gives: passive verb-is given)
2. The reality about social discrimination in the text (subject)
was revealed (verb) by Carlos Bulosan (object).
(active verb-revealed: passive verb- was revealed)
3. The gavel (subject) was pounded (verb) by the judge (object).
(active verb- pounded: passive verb- was pounded)
4. A small change in a straw hat (subject) was thrown (verb) by my brothers (object).
(active verb-threw: passive verb-was thrown)
The object in the active voice becomes the subject in the passive voice; the
subject in the active voice becomes the object in the passive voice.

Michael.

came into the store.
The book has already been
bought by them.

The letters have to be delivered
by her.
The meeting must be attended
by her.
Changing Passive Voice to Active Voice
To change passive voice to active voice, make the object of the sentence into the
subject, and turn the old subject as the object.
For example, this is a passive sentence: “The article is being read by most of my
class.” The object is most of my class, and the subject is the article.
Written in the active voice, this sentence would be “Most of my class is
reading the article.” Here, the new subject is most of my class and the object is the
article.
Examples:
Passive:
Relief goods are given by the official.
Active:
The official gives relief goods.
Passive:
Wounded men were helped by many boys.
Active:
Many boys helped the wounded men.
Passive:
My gadgets will be taken by someone.
Active:
Someone will take my gadgets.
