KEY CONCEPTS The Simple Past Tense indicates an action or condition that already happened or existed at some definite time in the past. Examples: I found my wallet yesterday. She enjoyed the trip last summer. Forming the simple past tense With most verbs, the simple past is created simply by adding -ED. However, with some verbs, you need to add -D or change the ending a little. Here are the rules: Verbs ending in… e How to make the simple past Add -d consonant +y change y to i, then add -ed one vowel+ one consonant (but not w or y) anything else including w double the consonant then add -ed add -ed Examples live – lived date – dated try – tried cry– cried tap – tapped commit– committed boil – boiled show– showed _____________________________________________________________________________________ Name of Writer: Kryssa S. To form the past perfect tense, you use the past tense of the verb "to have" which is “had”, and add it to the past participle of the main verb. (which can be either regular or irregular in form): For example: subject + had + past participle = past perfect tense. Examples: I found my wallet after I had reported it to the lost and found committee. She had enjoyed the trip by the time she entered High School. Pronunciation of -ed ending of Regular Verbs There are three different ways to pronounce the –ed ending: SOUND /t/ /d/ /id/ EXAMPLE worked played started PRONUNCIATION ‘t’ sound ‘d’ sound ‘id’ sound Touch your throat as you say a verb. Isolate the last sound before -ed (otherwise, there will always be vibration). 1. When the last sound before -ed is voiceless (which means you won’t feel your vocal cords vibrate), the -ed sound is /t/. Verb cook kiss like stop Past Tense cooked kissed liked stopped Pronunciation /t/ cooked kissed liked stopped 2.
