Meet Ahmad Khan and Butt Sahib: The
Emblems of Security
By: Noor Fatima Atif and Maryam Wasif
Whether you have been in this school for a year or ten, you have beyond any doubt encountered the delightful and
caring Ahmad Khan and Butt Sahab. From accompanying us on our field trips to memorizing our faces and number
plates these two committed men have dedicated their time and service to the students of Lahore Grammar School
Phase 1; 39 years and 10 years, for Ahmad Khan and Butt Sahab respectively. This is why we all as students of this
school should honor and respect the efforts they make for our protection. They are the two cogs of the working
machine that is LGS. These two ‘emblems of security’ regard the most rewarding part of their job to be the
experience of watching us children grow and graduate, with Ahmed Khan in specific expressing his appreciation for
“the respect he has received from the senior staff and students”, transforming his experience from one of an
obligatory job to that of a homelike environment. They both claim school life hasn’t changed, and the happiness and
liveliness of the children has remained a constant throughout their years in school. When asked about their job’s
benefits in specific, Butt Sahab found attending to our needs and comforts his ultimate joy while Ahmad Khan
lauded the presence of set working hours for himself, as well as fairness and respect, highlighting “I feel my boss is
very capable and just and I could not ask for anything more.” What was further heartwarming to hear was Ahmad
Khan proclaim that even after entering here “young and fresh faced” after all these years he still feels the “jawani”
he felt all those years ago. Butt Sahab also pointed out how farewells and sports day have also been rejuvenating and
joyful occasions during his tenure.
We decided to gain further insight through interviewing senior staff member such as Teacher Sabeen, Teacher
Tabassum and Aunty Amna;
When asking Teacher Tabassum about her familiarity with Ahmad Khan she highlighted how he is a friendly
fatherly figure towards the students, someone who has a remarkable memory remembering everyone’s names.
Teacher Tabassum further remarked that she thinks of him as the ‘Defender of the Realm and Protector of the
Damsels within.’ He has been working here through many generations, protecting our gate and keeping us safe
inside. As Ahmad Khan is nearing retirement age, Butt Sahib has taken over his role in a most commendable
manner. He is friendly and guides all students to their cars with great care and attentiveness.
Aunty Amna described Ahmad Khan as one of the most faithful personalities at LGS, ‘his memory is like a
computer chip, knowing all the girls from preschool to A levels, as well as the name of their cars’ she also remarked
‘I have yet to see such an honest and upright person.’
END
We would like to end with messages from our respective protectors:
Butt Sahib: dedicate yourselves to your studies and succeed.
Ahmed Khan: Focus on your further studies and make the school proud of your achievements, and continue to
respect your elders.
