Young Learners English: Starters Activity 1: CEFL Master Chef Make your own breakfast/dessert and record yourself preparing it. Examples of breakfast/lunch/desserts: Egg Sandwiches, Pancakes, Fruit Oatmeal, Pasta etc. (anything convenient and easy to make) Duration of video: 5 minutes or more Example 1. Students describe the food they are making. Example: Today, I will be preparing cabbage soup with chicken for my family. 2. Students guide viewers through the ‘Ingredients’ and show each one to the camera. Example: ‘The ingredients are…’/ ‘You will need to have… • 1 cabbage • 250g of onions • 1-2 cloves of garlic • 100g of boiled chicken • 10g of margarine/butter • 1 tin (450 ml) of sliced tomatoes • bread for toast • salt and pepper 3. Students guide viewers through the ‘Preparation’ by saying each step out loud: • First, wash the cabbage and then slice it. • Second, peel the onions and garlic and chop them. • Slice the chicken. • Then, preheat a pan and melt the margarine/butter. • Next put the cabbage and onions in the pan. • Fry over a medium heat and remember to stir from time to time. • Add the garlic and the chicken and pan fry for a moment. • Then, add the sliced tomatoes and some water. • Boil over a medium to high heat. • Next, simmer the vegetables with chicken over a low heat for 3 – 4 minutes. • Slice the bread and toast the slices in the toaster. • Season the dish with salt and pepper. • Serve the “cabbage dish” with toast. 4.
