TESTING
HYPOTHESIS
Baquilan Resettlement High School
We make decisions every day.
Process:
1. Weigh alternatives.
2. Collect evidence.
3. Make a decision.
A hypothesis (plural: hypotheses)
in a scientific context, is a testable
statement about the relationship
between two or more variables or
a proposed explanation for some
observed phenomenon.
Types of Hypotheses
1. Null hypothesis
2. Alternative hypothesis
Hypothesis testing
• is a decision-making process for
evaluating claims about a
population based on the
characteristics of a sample
purportedly coming from that
population.
Hypothesis testing involves making a decision
between two opposing hypotheses.
 One is a negation of the other
 If one is true, the other must be false.
 If one is true, the other must be false.
When null hypothesis is accepted, stop.
But when the null hypothesis is rejected, this
leads to another option, which is the alternative
hypothesis.
Null hypothesis, denoted by Ho is a statement
that there is no difference between a parameter
and a specific value.
Alternative hypothesis, denoted by H1 is a
statement that there is a difference between a
parameter and a specific value.
The Null hypothesis is the starting point of
investigation.
Example:
Guilty? Not guilty?
Rejected? Accepted?
Remember:
NO TWO THINGS CAN BE AND CANNOT BE AT
THE SAME TIME. This is mathematical principle.
Does the presence of a mentoring relationship influence firstgeneration students’ intentions to remain at their university?
Ho:
The presence of a mentoring relationship does not influence
first-generation students’ intention to remain at their university.
H1:
The presence of a mentoring relationship influences firstgeneration students’ intention to remain at their university.
The school registrar believes that the average
number of enrolees this school year is not the
same as the previous school year.
Explain:
Two-tailed Test VS One-Tailed Test
State the null and the alternative hypotheses of the
following statements.
1. A medical trial is conducted to test whether or not a
new medicine reduces uric acid by 50%.
2. We want to test whether the general average of
students in Math is different from 80%.
3. We want to test whether the mean height of Grade 8
students is 58 inches.
4. We want to test if BRHS students take more than six
years to graduate from high school, on the average.
5. We want to test if it takes less than 60 minutes to
answer the quarterly test in Calculus.
