Watching Commercials
• The power point does include speaker notes.
• Questions about individual commercials do contain an answer key , although all
answers will vary.
• Questions for the “overall” and “dive deeper” will have varying answers.
Students should grasp that combining ethos, pathos, and logos in an
entertaining and memorable way is key. They should also realize that
doing so takes practice and skill. Incorporating those components will
require more than one draft.
Procedures:
• Begin the power point, elaborating with notes as needed.
• After watching the commercials, divide students into four groups. Assign each
group a commercial and corresponding sheet. Students may need to watch their
commercial again.
• Ask each group to explain what they learned from studying the commercial.
• The final two sheets can be done in groups, as a class, or individually. The
second page, “dive deeper” requires higher levels of thinking.
Upon my analysis, these activities could meet these standards:
SL9-10.1
SL9-10.3
SL11-12.1
SL11-12.3
Note: I am not associated with and do not represent any of the companies in the
commercials used in the power point, questions, or discussions.
