Final Output: Managing Filipino Students’ Mental Health
Case Study Guide Questions:
1. Analyze the detailed record of James. What warning signs of mental health
problems are present in him? Is it enough to say that he is suffering from a potential
mental health problem? Explain your answer.
It was mentioned that in Grade 7, James was consistently an active and bubbly
student. However, this is not the case this school year. James exhibits some
warning signs of mental health problems such as increased absences, self-injury
or self-harm, signs of substance use, drastic change in mood and behavior, and
dangerous or out-of-control behavior that desires to hurt others. These warning
signs are sufficient to say that he is suffering from a potential mental health
problem. Either one sign or multiple signs show, we need to take it with a grain of
salt. We should not take these signs lightly for it may lead to a more serious
problem where it might be too late for us to help a student.
2. As a teacher, what action must you consider to address James’ case?
With these signs manifesting, the most probable action is to let James know that
there is someone who will listen to him and not judge him. Although it appears that
James doesn’t want to talk to the teacher, the teacher should be more patient and
continuously try until James is ready to open up. In addition, it is important to
continuously communicate with the school’s guidance counselor so that a proper
action can be done regarding James’ case.
3. As a part of a school community, what can you suggest to the school heads to
address mental health concerns of the students?
In light of the pandemic, it is now more important to tackle and address mental
health concerns. Schools should strengthen their respective mental health
awareness programs by not only providing talks/seminars but also regular
counseling sessions. Schools should also consider training teachers on
addressing early signs of mental health concerns without compromising the
teachers’ own mental health. The schools must make sure that teachers’ mental
health is also taken care of.
