Topic 2: Dance Improvisation: DANCE IMPROVISATION AND Explore the elements of time, space, fast and slow pace, COMPOSITION levels, force, balance, smooth and jerky movements. Topic 3: Dance Theory: DANCE THEORY AND LITERACY Revise Skills from lesson 1-6. See and follow the guided learner activities as set in the learner column below. Adjust music/activities to suit your classroom environment. How to prepare for today’s lesson: Activity 1: The warm up games can be done in groups of 2 – 4. These are really fun activities for the whole family to participate in. When placing chairs in a circle, make sure it is 1.5 m apart for social distancing purposes. You can use the warm up music in the digital resources’ column, or any other appropriate music. Activity 2: First allow your child to practise the dance sequence, so that they can familiarise themselves with the order of movements. Then allow them to dance the whole sequence with music as indicated in the digital resource’s column. Your child can also follow the guided video that is available in the digital resource column. Activity 3: Please engage, support, guide and motivate your child during this lesson. Reflect on your child’s performance by completing the reflection rubric together. Discuss your observations with your child. Be honest, sensitive and allow them to critically analyse their own performance. Please make sure that your child keeps this lesson plan and activities for revision purposes. For music and video examples, please see the digital resources as indicated in the teacher column above. 1|Page ACTIVITY 1: FAMILY WARM UP GAMES LEARNERS’ ACTIVITIES GAME A – DANCING CHAIRS 2 – 4 Team Members Step 1: Sit on the edge of a chair. Do a spinal roll on 4 counts. (1, 2, 3 & 4) Step 2: Start the music! Step 3: Move in a clockwise direction around your own chair for 5 seconds. Repeat in an anti-clockwise direction. Step 4: Now move to the other chairs. 5 Seconds in a clockwise and then 5 seconds in an anticlockwise direction. Step 5: Music stops! Freeze by standing on top of a chair and balancing on any body part. Step 6: Repeat step 2 – 4. Step 7: Music stops! Freeze in a sitting position on the chair and balance on a lower level body part. Step 8: Repeat step 2 – 4. Step 9: Music stops! Freeze in front of the chair on the lowest level of balancing on any body part. Have fun and see how many different balancing positions you can do! 😊 TIME FOR YOUR FINAL DANCE PERFORMANCE WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHES & GET THE MUSIC READY😊 REMEMBER SOCIAL DISTANCING! 1.5m APART GAME B – CALL & RESPOND One person calls and the other team members respond. 1 – Lunge / 2 – Shuffles / 3 – Leg Swings / 4 – Sways Step 1: Each team member stands next to a chair. Step 2: The caller shouts: 1 / 2 / 2! (Repeat for memorisation.) Team members perform lunge / shuffle / shuffle Rules: Every team member must first know what action each number refers to. The caller must repeat each sequence of numbers twice. Be creative! Start with small sequences at a slow pace and then make it more challenging at a faster pace. 2|Page ACTIVITY 2: FINAL DANCE PERFORMANCE SEQUENCE You must use a chair and two cleaning cloths. First practise the sequence and then do it with music. Step 1: Sit on the edge of the chair with your feet slightly apart, knees in line with your toes, pull shoulders backwards and pull in your abdominal (stomach) muscles. Step 2: On the counts, 1 – 3, do a spinal roll and stand up straight on the 4th count. Step 3: Step forward with your left-, then right foot on the counts of 5 & 6 and move into 2nd position on the counts, 7 & 8. Step 4: Roll your right hip inwards and outwards. Repeat with your left hip. Step 5: Isolate (move) your ribcage to the right side and back to the middle (mid-line). Repeat to the left side. Step 6: Isolate (move) your right shoulder forwards on the counts of 1 & 2, then backwards on the counts, 3 & 4. Repeat with the left shoulder on the counts, 5 – 8. Step 7: Sway body to right and left. At the same time sway your right arm to both sides crossing your chest at shoulder level. Step 8: Do a crossover with your left foot over the right leg to the left. Repeat the crossover to the right. Step 9: Repeat step 8, this time with your right foot. Step 10: Jump on both your feet towards the right, left, right and left on the counts,1- 4. Step 11: Extend your left leg in a straight position towards the back. Keep your right knee in a bent position. Keep this lunge position on the counts, 5 & 6. Step 12: Move into 2nd position on the counts, 7 & 8. Step 13: Perform 12 step-hops towards your chair and stop on the right side of the chair. Step 14: Isolate (move) your hips to the right and then to the left. Step 15: Lift your left leg, perform ½ a turn towards a chair, stretch your upper body towards the chair and dust off the seat with a rag and turn back to the front. Step 16: Lift your right leg, do a ½ turn towards the chair, stretch upper towards the chair and dust the seat again, and turn back to the front. Step 17: Lift your right leg, do a turn on your left foot towards your right, spot, turn and stand in 2nd position. Step 18: Throw both cloths to the side of the room. Step 19: Swing your left leg towards the front and shuffle, starting with right-, then left leg. x 3. Step 20: Transfer your weight onto your right leg in 2nd position, tap with your left foot while moving it in a circular movement clockwise on the counts,1 - 4. Step 21: Lift your right leg, slide with your left leg, then lift your left leg and slide with your right leg. x 2. Step 22: Turn towards your chair, open your right hip, step onto your right foot towards the right side, then step with your left foot, towards the left side and stand in 2nd position. Step 23: Go down into a sitting position on your chair. Spotting while turning to keep the weight transferred on both legs evenly. Jump off both feet when you turn. SHUFFLES Stand and slide/swop both feet and move into a lunge. Weight evenly spread on front and back leg. Front leg bend, back leg extended. Neck, shoulders and legs in line. SPOTTING Turn clockwise then anticlockwise. Following your shoulder keeping your head in line with head and shoulders while keeping your eyes on the spot while turning. Stand and slide/swop both feet and move into a lunge. Weight evenly spread on front and back leg. Front leg bend, back leg not extended. Neck, shoulders and legs partially in line. LEG SWINGS/BRUSHES Stand with heels touching and toes turned out to the side. Kick first the right, then left leg upwards straight to the front from the hip joint. Weight transferred onto the leg that is stretched in standing position. Body well balanced in standing position. Stand with heels touching and toes turned out to the side. Kick first the right, then left leg not straight to the front from the hip joint. Weight transferred on the leg that is stretched in standing position. Body not well balanced. Struggle to slide/swop both legs into a lunge. Weight not evenly spread; back leg not extended. Neck, shoulders and legs not in line Cannot do shuffles. Stand with feet together. Feet not turned out to the side. Kick first the right, then left leg not straight to the front from the hip joint. Weight not transferred and body not well balanced. Cannot do leg swings or brushes. Eyes are wandering but head and shoulders are also not in line. Turn clockwise only. Following your shoulder keeping your head in line with head and shoulders but eyes are wandering. Cannot do spotting. ACTIVITY 3: VISUALISATION & REFLECTION DISCUSSION Sit opposite your parent/guardian. Revise the visualisation exercise from lesson 6 for today’s cool down. Look closely at the reflection rubric above. Discuss with your parent/guardian which skills you have done well and which you need to improve on. In your work/writing book, write a paragraph about your dance experience. Which skills were you good at? What can you do to improve the skills which you struggle with?
