Geography Activities (Starter; Shared Work; Guided/Independent Work; Plenary) Welcome Work: What is geography? Chn to discuss in pairs then as a class. Stunning Starter Elm Class – Topic Planning Unit: Lake District and Europe Term: Spring 1 Assessment Show chn mystery box and explore the clues inside (Beatrix Potter books, travel brochures, estate agent adverts, photos, maps etc) Activity 1: Chn to work in tables to explore the clues and use atlas’ to deduce which region we are going to be exploring this term. Discuss what chn already know about the Lake District, some may have visited – brainstorm words and ideas. Chn to come up with questions that they would like to discover in this term. Do a ‘flyover’ using Google maps. Discuss location in the UK and the physical features that chn can see such as rivers and mountains. Plenary: Classbook Chn to share their paragraphs – chn to magpie a fact from another group and write one more sentence. Activity 2: Chn to work in pairs and produce a paragraph explaining where this region is and some key facts about the physical features. Chn can use Ipads to access the National Park website for research. Activity 1: Using a map of the Lake District, chn to explore key features such as highest mountains, largest lakes, significant towns and other human features such as railway stations. Chn to mark thes on a blank map of the Lake District. Gather back together as a class to mark and annotate on Digimaps for Schools of the region. Activity 2: Using a map of the Lake District, chn to collect interesting place names and mark them onto their maps. Chn to discuss their meaning and if/how the name reflects what the landscape is like. Chn to use Ipads to compare weather statistics between the Lake District and Wansbeck. Chn to fill in comparison table showing rainfall data and temperature throughout the year. Activity 2: Discuss the chn results – when would be the best time to visit the Lake District? Chn to write a weather report advising tourists about the weather and best time to visit.
