Exposition – a. Characters – Santiago – the old man who has been a fisherman for many years “I may not be as strong as I think,” the old man said, “But I know many tricks and I have resolution.” Manolin – a boy who cares about Santiago and has been his deck hand since he was 5 “There are many good fishermen and some great ones. But there is only you." b. Setting – Cuba, mostly in the water in a boat c. Events – Santiago has been very unlucky and has not caught a fish in 84 days. All the other fisherman and Manolin’s parents think Santiago can’t catch fish anymore. Manolin parent’s make him fish on another boat. He catches three fish so Manolin’s parents won’t let him fish with Santiago anymore. Manolin cares about Santiago and feels bad that he can’t fish with him anymore. Complications – a. Santiago wants to prove he can still catch fish, so he goes way far out all by himself to try and catch a big marlin. b. He hooks a marlin and wishes Manolin could be there to help him because his hand is cramping. c. Santiago is tired and hungry after fighting the fish for over two days. His hand is being cut by the fishing line and he is being pulled farther out to sea. Climax – After three days of fighting the fish, Santiago reels in the huge marlin and kills it. Resolution Santiago ties the marlin to the side of his boat and sharks attack the marlin. He tries many tools to fight off the sharks but all that’s left is a huge skeleton. Santiago washes up on the shore and everyone in the village is amazed at the size of the marlin skeleton. Even though sharks got the fish, Santiago earns respect back and Manolin decides he is going to fish with Santiago no matter what his parents say. Theme – Determination Earns Respect Symbol – the marlin is a symbol of respect because once Santiago returns with a fish the people in the village with respect him again. Conflict – Man vs. Society – the people of the village think Santiago is unlucky because he hasn’t caught a fish in 84 days. Everyone looks at him as and old failed fisherman and Manolin’s parents won’t even let him fish with him anymore.
