a)
How can you tell which materials
are useful and which are
harmful?
b) How can you make useful
materials based on their
properties?
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:



Identify physical and chemical properties of
materials;
Determine whether a material is useful or harmful;
and
Reflect on how to make useful materials based on
their properties.
Properties of Materials


Properties are characteristics by which
you use to describe the different kinds
of materials.
These are characteristics that give
each substance an identity.
What’s the difference between sugar and salt?
Sugar
Salt
What’s the difference between pure water from alcohol?
Pure water

What’s the difference between silver and gold?

Chemical Properties
Physical Properties



It is a characteristic of
material that can be
observed without
changing the material’s
composition.
It is usually observed
using the senses (size,
shape, and smell).
It also involve
measurements (density,
volume, and mass).


It is a characteristic of
material that is
observable when
material changes into a
new substance with
different properties.
This change is brought
about by material’s
reaction with heat, air,
and other substances.

Safety Precautionary Measures
When Handling Materials
1. Understand the
properties of
materials to help
you determine their
uses as well as the
hazards in their use.
Safety Precautionary Measures
When Handling Materials
2. Be observant of
the changes that
happen in
material,
especially in
foods.

When Handling Materials
3. Product labels
provide you with the
characteristics of
the material which
you take in as food
or use for different
purposes.

Properties will help
you decide which
materials can be
used for specific
purposes as well as
how to handle them
with care.
a) Poisonous materials
can cause injury or
death.
b) Corrosive materials
can affect the skin and
react with metals.
c) Flammable
materials are capable
of catching fire in the
presence of sparks or
flames.
d) Conductors allow
the transfer of heat or
flow of electricity.
Activity
Instructions:
1. Prepare one picture of a product whether it is food, personal care
product, medicine, cleaning aid, pesticide, electrical product, and
others. Also prepare one picture of a product that has warnings or
precautions.
Example:
2. Send the two pictures to my messenger account: Mary Archie
Seroje LPT.
Activity
Instructions:
3. On a piece of paper/bondpaper, fill the following:
Name of the
Product
Uses of the Product
Example:
1. Ethyl Alcohol
Use as a disinfection,
sterilization, body
massage, and general
antiseptic use in
hospitals and homes.
2.
Warnings on Product or
Precautions
Do not swallow or use
near eyes. For children,
use under adult
supervision. Keep tightly
closed and store at
temperatures not
exceeding 30℃.
Explain how the
product is useful or
harmful.
It is useful because it
can kill 70 – 99%
percent of germs,
bacteria and viruses.
It is harmful if taken
because it can cause
alcohol poisoning and
organ damage.
