PETROLEUM
• All petroleum products have a FLASH POINT
• What is a ‘flash point’
– This is the temperature at which a certain product
starts to give off vapour
– Until the product reaches this temperature, fire
cannot be induced
– When a fire burns, it is the vapour that burns, not
the liquid fuel itself

PETROLEUM
• Basic Fire Fighting
– The best available extinguisher for a fuel fire is
the FOAM type
– FOAM blocks out oxygen by forming a layer
over the fuel
– You carry dry powder as this is multi use on
your vehicle such as electrics etc.

Questions:
• How is static electricity different from other
forms of electricity?
• What is the difference between loading and
off-loading with and without a bonding wire?
Transport services limited
Static Electricity
– One side of the Bonding Wire is attached to the vehicle
and the other to a metal bar that is clean of rust and has
no paint (preferably copper).
– This metal rod must be at least 2 feet into the ground to
ensure effective removal of static electricity.
– NB: Throwing the bonding wire into the soil will not
work. Always attach to a bonding point as above.
– Always confirm contacts of your bonding wire are good
on both your truck and location

Questions
• What could go wrong if you load or off-load without attaching
the bonding wire?
•What are the difficulties encountered when trying to follow
laid down procedures in using the bonding wire?
• How safe do you think a customer feels seeing you offloading product without your bonding wire attached?

Static Electricity
• Prevention
– Attach bonding strap that comes into contact with the road
surface. This equalises the charge between the two
areas.
– Always travel with maximum safe loading capacity in the
tanks. This prevents too much movement of the goods
and therefore less build up of static.
– Attach the bonding wire before loading or offloading!!
