The discipline Engineer and the discipline Foreman shall ensure the required work permits are available and in place on a daily basis. Similarly they shall ensure that utilized drawings are latest version. Surface preparation shall conform to the Project specifications. Client specifications and drawings, manufacturer instructions/recommendations shall supersede the techniques detailed in this procedure when they differ. The following procedure is a basic outline of requirements and in all cases the relevant SATIP (if available) shall be reviewed by QC Manager or QC Supervisor to ensure Inspectors are fully aware of tests and documentation requirements prior to start of work. Material Material shall be in accordance with client requirements and specifications as per SAMSS, material receiving inspection shall be in accordance with relevant SATIP and SAIC. 2. Personnel and Equipment All Abrasive Blasters, Painting/Coating Applications and Crew Supervisors shall be qualified, approved and possess valid certification in accordance with SAEP 312. All compressed air used for abrasive blasting or coating operations shall be free of oil moisture and contamination. The QC Inspector shall as a minimum check air quality at the start and mid points of each 8 hour period. All Blasting equipment shall have an operational dead-man control fitted. Minimum nozzle pressure for blasting of steel shall be 90 psig. Quality Control Equipment shall be available as required by project scope and SAES-H100 Attachments. 3. Process Control for Painting Works All painting must conform to the applicable approved project painting specifications. A thorough review of these specifications at the beginning of the project will help to assure quality workmanship and avoid rework. Many items should be painted before erection in order to achieve required quality at lowest cost. When painting structural steel prior to erection, care must be taken to ensure that mark numbers needed for erection are not painted over. The following items should be painted before subsequent operations take place that would make them inaccessible: The topside of pipe supports and pipe sleeper bearing angles should be painted before the piping is installed. Miscellaneous pipe supports, clamps, guides, etc., should be painted before attachment to the pipe and especially before the pipe is insulated. When grating requires paint, the gratings and their supports should be painted before installation. Pipe flanges and other exposed surfaces on insulated pipe lines should be cleaned and painted, in accordance with the specifications, before insulating the line. DWG.TYPE PLANT NO. Surface Preparation The Painting Foreman shall ensure that personnel are qualified as required by SAEP-316 and in accordance with Client requirements, specifications and applicable standards carry out the surface preparation. Visual inspection shall be carried out in order to decide if substrate requires solvent or detergent cleaning prior to abrasive blasting. Cleaning shall be done in accordance with specifications. Sandblasting should be performed outside the work areas, whenever possible. And only with sand prior approved by Client Project Inspection Unit. A REV NO. All other items which will be inaccessible after erection should be painted prior to erection. Primer Coat Before commencing with the application of the primer coat of paint a thorough review of the painting specifications and APCS must be made. DATE: CERTIFIED Complete kits shall be mixed in accordance to the manufacturer instructions. They shall be thoroughly mixed until they are smooth and free from lumps and then strained. Inorganic zinc coating shall be mechanically agitated at all times. DATE: CONSTRUCTION AGENCY Coating shall commence with noting pot life. Over coats/topcoats shall be applied within the manufacturers minimum and maximum re-coat times. DATE: OPERATIONS Dry film thickness of each coating shall be in accordance with specification or manufacturers recommendations, whichever is greater. The primer coat must be inspected and approved before application of the second or finish coat. Finish Coats Identification of various components by painting with special colors varies from job to job. The Painting Foreman shall refer to the project paint specifications for specific requirements. The following items may require color identification: Firewater piping and fire hydrants. Piping in hazardous service. Guard posts and rails. When applicable, the requirements for safety color schemes and plant color scheme shall be adhered to, as indicated in the specifications.
