DJ&A SUMMER INTERNSHIPS DJ&A is excited to offer a variety of summer internship opportunities for students who desire to gain hands-on experience, develop their skills, and learn more about the work we do and the clients we serve. Through our internship program, interns will spend the summer gaining relevant experience on projects within the consulting industry in a supportive and exciting environment. We are currently looking for interns in all of our primary service areas, which include: civil and structural engineering, surveying, GIS, landscape architecture, and environmental sciences. Who is DJ&A? DJ&A is a multidisciplinary professional services consulting firm that delivers a diverse range of engineering, environmental, surveying, and planning services to clients across the nation. Founded in 1973 by two former U.S. Forest Service employees who saw a need for a company that uniquely understood Forest Service projects, DJ&A has continued to grow and expand over the last 48 years by embracing the values of our founders. Today, we have a team of 80+ skilled professionals spanning across offices in Missoula, MT; Vancouver, WA; Lakewood, CO; and Sioux Falls, SD. We are proud to serve a diverse range of clients, including federal agencies such as the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Federal Highway Administration, and are connected locally with state DOTs, municipalities, and private clients. Internship Goals Internship Overview Our goal is to provide interns with opportunities to gain relevant, hands-on experience on projects within the professional services consulting industry. What We’re Looking For: Candidates who are currently enrolled in an accredited academic program who desire to build a career in one of the following service areas: civil and structural engineering, surveying, GIS, landscape architecture, and environmental sciences. As an intern, opportunities could include: • On the job training within DJ&A’s primary service areas, which include: civil and structural engineering, surveying, GIS, landscape architecture, and environmental sciences. • Gain basic technical expertise in project design (e.g. land survey/data collection, preliminary design, final design, engineering estimating, NEPA Processing, environmental planning, etc.) • Obtain experience designing within multiple software programs (e.g. AutoCAD Civil 3D, HECRAS, HY8, MicroStation, Sketchup, ArcGIS, etc.) • Gain experience in performing fieldwork (land surveying, environmental monitoring, construction observation, etc.) • Gain exposure working with a variety of project managers Internship Location(s): Missoula, Montana; Lakewood, Colorado; Vancouver, Washington, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Duration/Schedule: Interns will be expected to work a 40-hour work week for approximately 10-12 weeks from May through August. The position will require the candidate to work MondayThursday from 7:00 am-5:00 pm and Friday 7:00 am-4:00 pm with every other Friday off. Overtime may be required due to project deadlines or high demand workloads Compensation: • Paid hourly experience. wage commensurate with their • Overtime is paid at time and a half of an hourly wage • Work-related travel costs are covered by DJ&A djanda.com Internship Program Outline The following outline is meant to give potential internship candidates an overview of an expected schedule for our internship program. This is schedule is subject to change depending on an intern’s workload demands and interests. All interns will be assigned to a specific discipline group within DJ&A and will have a supervisor who is responsible for providing them with mentorship, supervision, and support. Week 1: The goal of this week is to get to know our new interns and provide them with the direction and support needed for success during the remainder of their internship. Candidates who are invited to intern with us will arrange a mutually-agreeable start date. During their first week, interns will attend an orientation led by our internship committee. This orientation will cover: • Introduction to our company and our staff • Overview of our internship program details and expectations • Goal setting for the internship • Review of DJ&A’s employee handbook, company policies, and safety materials • Summary of ongoing project work related to an intern’s specific area of interest • Initial work assignments Internship Summary Presentation The orientation will also provide interns with information about a presentation we ask each intern to give at the conclusion of their internship. These 10–15-minute presentations are given to a select group of office staff and typically include: • An outline of an intern’s goals for their internship and what they accomplished • An overview of projects and tasks that were completed Weeks 2-11: Once interns have been introduced to our company, they will begin to work closely with our staff to support projects related to their specific area(s) of interest. Our internship committee coordinates closely with our team’s project managers to make sure each intern is assigned to work that helps them gain hands-on experience, learn new skills, and contribute in a meaningful way to our company. DJ&A provides a wide variety of professional services and we try to give our interns as many opportunities as possible to learn and gain exposure to the different disciplines we provide. Any time not spent working on project-based work will be used to complete baseline office tasks and on development of their presentations. Depending on an intern’s skill-set or interests, these tasks may include: • Drafting • Data entry and organization • Figure and table preparation • Literature review and research Week 12: Interns use their final week of their time with us to wrap up remaining project tasks and give their internship presentation to a select group of staff.
