MATERIAL SELECTION SELECTION CRITERIA FOR SOCKET The material selected should be soft, light weight, chemically inactive, have low coefficient of thermal expansion, easy to use, good corrosion resistance and cost efficient. Also, the strength factor and modulus of elasticity should be high. MATERIALS SELECTED Based on these four materials are selected and they are CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer) GFRP (Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer) AFRP (Abaca Fibre Reinforced Polymer) PP (Poly Propylene) These four materials are commonly used in manufacturing of socket. Among these four materials, the material chosen for socket is CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer). Material Carbon fiberreinforced composite (CFRP), Glass fiberreinforced composite (GFRP), Abaca fiberreinforced composite (AFRP ) Ultimate Tensile Strength (MPa) Flexural Strength (MPa) Modulus of Elasticity (GPa) Yield Strength (MPa) 481.8 201.5 40.7 36.4 282.3 130.3 11.4 34.3 415.3 42.2 27.3 49.4 Thermoplastic polypropylene. 33.3 16.7 3.5 153.8 From the table we can infer that CFRC has high strength factor and is relatively very low cost when compared to other materials listed in the table. Hence CFRC is very suitable selection for the manufacture of Socket. SELECTION CRITERIA FOR PYLON The selection criteria for pylon are that it should have light weight with high compressive strength and also cost efficient. MATERIAL SELECTED The following materials are very common in pylon manufacturing and satisfies the above said properties. They are Ti-6Al-4V AL-6061-T6 SS 304 Material Ultimate Tensile Strength (MPa) Impact Strength (MPa) Modulus of Elasticity (GPa) Compressive Strength (MPa) Ti-6Al-4V 215.9 3.9 25.9 862 Al-6061-T6 114.8 9.3 25.6 250 SS 304 63.1 40.6 24.1 205 From the table, it is very clear that titanium has very high compressive strength. But when it comes to cost titanium costlier than the other. When it comes to cost Al-6061-T6 alloy stands first as it is comparatively lower than the Ti alloy. Therefore Al-6061-T6 alloy is chosen as the suitable material for Pylon. MATERIAL FOR FOOT The foot designed in this project is called Poly stack foot. The materials chosen for foot are Delrin Vulcrepe Both materials are strong, flexible enough to deform under the loads experienced by the foot, compressible. When it comes to cost both materials are very cheap and easily affordable. Therefore, when it comes to the properties, Delrin is quite flexible when compared to the vulcrepe. Hence Delrin is selected as a suitable material for foot.
