Practical Applications of Polar molecules
1) Determine if the following compounds are polar or non-polar.
a) CO2
b) CH3-OH
c) CH3Cl 1
2) Draw a diagram showing the interaction between dissolved NaCl ions and water
3) Explain the process of cleaning up latex or alkyd based paints. Why are they different?
4) You have a job interview, but your pen just exploded in the front pocket of your white
dress shirt. You look in your purse/briefcase. In it you find a bottle of water, some hairspray, and some baby oil. Which would work best to help remove the stain, and why?
5) Describe why water beads on a newly waxed car.
6) Some pesticides such as DDT bioaccumulate in organisms, and will end up biomagni-
fying in food chains. What about the structure and polarity of DDT, and living organisms
makes this happen?
7) Using your knowledge of intermolecular forces, describe the difference in melting and
boiling points listed in the chart below.
