Save planet Earth
In this unit students will investigate Earth's resources. They describe how Earth's resources are used and the importance of conserving resources for the future of all living things. They use
informal measurements to record observations from experiments. Students use their science knowledge of conservation to propose and explain actions that can be taken to conserve Earth's
resources, and decisions they can make in their everyday lives. Students share their ideas about conservation of Earth's resources in a presentation. Students will learn how Aboriginal peoples
and Torres Strait Islander peoples use their knowledge of conservation in their everyday lives.
For further information to support teaching of the unit, view the:
• Year level plan
• Teacher lesson overview
Throughout the unit, ensure all students have opportunities to develop their higher-order thinking skills. Students develop skills in thinking when they are encouraged to reflect, inquire, generate,
and analyse, synthesise and evaluate. Resources that support higher-order thinking skills:
• Helpful information - Higher-order thinking skills Years P-9
Safety
Teachers need to identify safety issues and conduct risk assessments. For this unit teachers should:
• refer to the Health and Safety policy pertaining to schools
• consult the Curriculum Activity Risk Management Guidelines
• ensure students wear personal protective equipment

In addition to the teacher's risk assessment, students are required to complete risk assessments for their own projects, under the guidance of their teacher.
Schools should consult the Guideline for Managing Risks with Chemicals in DET Workplaces (HLS-PR-006).

Detailed instructions are available to assist schools when registering for the first time, in the document Registering for Chemwatch GoldFFX online.
Throughout this unit, students will require ready access to ICT at a whole-class, small-group and individual level. Such ICT include spreadsheet software, graphing software, graphic calculators
or mobile device apps. Note: A mobile device is a portable computing device, typically having a display screen with touch input or a miniature keyboard. Ensure that the use of ICT in the
classroom, including mobile devices, complies with DET policy requirements - Advice for State Schools on Acceptable Use of ICT Facilities and Devices.

Cross-curriculum priorities
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures
Students will develop a knowledge, deep understanding and respect for Aboriginal peoples' and Torres Strait Islander peoples' history and culture and build an awareness that their histories are
part of a shared history belonging to all Australians.
The embedding of Aboriginal peoples' and Torres Strait Islander peoples' histories and cultures into the curriculum can be a challenging task. For further information including pedagogical
approaches refer to C2C: Aboriginal peoples & Torres Strait Islander peoples Cross Curriculum Priority support.
Sustainability
Students will develop the knowledge, skills, values and world views necessary for people to act in ways that contribute to more sustainable patterns of living.
For further information, refer to Sustainability in the Australian Curriculum and the Learning area statements.
Assessing student learning
Assessment name: Using Earth's resources
Assessment description: Students identify different uses of one of Earth's resources and describe ways to conserve it. Students use informal measurements to make observations.
In this unit, assessment of student learning aligns to the following aspects of the achievement standard.
By the end of Year 2, students describe changes to objects, materials and living things. They identify that certain materials and resources have different uses and describe examples of where
science is used in people's daily lives.
Students pose and respond to questions about their experiences and predict outcomes of investigations. They use informal measurements to make and compare observations. They record and
represent observations and communicate ideas in a variety of ways.
Monitoring student learning
Student learning should be monitored throughout the teaching and learning process to determine student progress and learning needs.
Each lesson provides opportunities to gather evidence about how students are progressing and what they need to learn next.
Specific monitoring opportunities in this unit may include observation, consultations and samples of student work.
Monitoring task
Monitoring name: Use of measurement activities (Lessons 1-10)
Monitoring description: Students use informal measurements to measure plant growth in the soil experiment and how much water is wasted from a dripping tap.

Feedback
Feedback may relate to misunderstandings and common alternative conceptions. In this unit this may include:
• not relating Earth's resources to the needs of living things. Explain that Earth provides air, water and land resources. Living things need to breathe fresh air, drink and/or live in clean water,
eat food provided by the land and access shelter provided by the land
• thinking that because there is a lot of water in the ocean, there is plenty of water to drink. Explain to students that the water in the ocean is too salty for most living things to drink
• not recognising that water wastage can contribute to a lack of water in the future. Explain to students that fresh drinking water is precious and needs to be conserved because we can't rely
on always having enough rainfall to supply water for all living things in the future
• thinking their own actions have no effect on water conservation. Explain that every person who uses water responsibly contributes to water conservation
• thinking that all soil is the same and can be used in the same way. Explain that different soil types can be used for different purposes
• thinking that soil/dirt is everywhere so there is no need to conserve it. Explain that contaminated or polluted soil may be unusable; we need different soil types and qualities for different
purposes, so if the right type of soil is not available, we are unable to serve these purposes, e.g. growing plants
• thinking that resources taken from the ground will never run out. Explain that there is a limited supply of the resources extracted from the ground
• thinking that their own actions have no impact on the amount of waste accumulated. Explain to students that if everybody reduces their own amount of disposable waste, there will be less
waste overall
• thinking that Earth is too big for their own actions to have an impact on Earth's resources. Explain that protecting the environment and conserving resources have the most success when
everyone in society performs actions to conserve Earth's resources.
