TITLE: THE UNEXPECTED CHRIST TEXT: ISAIAH 53 INTRODUCTION: All of us have our own standards and preferences in all sorts of things. Because of this fact, we tend expect God to move and to do things our way in our prayers, in our walk, as well as in our ministry. However, God does not work in the lenses of finite human comprehension. (Isaiah 55:9) For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. God moves in the most unpredictable and sovereign way. He has His own way of doing things afar from the corrupted understanding of men; and we should be glad because of that. (Proverbs 14:12) There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Praise God for His ways are just and perfect. Even many times we can’t understand what exactly He is doing, Alleluia, He knows every detail of it and we shall witness in our study just how perfectly peculiar God’s ways are, specifically in the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ when He lived on this earth. Foremost, we see in our verses the contempt Isaiah prophesied that the children of Israel would put on the person of Christ because He was not what they expected him to be. The Jews expected Him to be: 1. EVERLASTING FATHER: (Isaiah 9:6) For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 2. HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL: (Isaiah 41:14) Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. 3. ELECT OF GOD: (Isaiah 42:1) Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. 4. ARM OF THE LORD: (Isaiah 51:9) Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon? BRO. HAROLD DAVE O. CALACDAY SERMON ON ISAIAH 5. JUDGE OF ISRAEL: (Micah 5:1) Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek. 6. KING: (Zechariah 9:9) Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. 7. DESIRE OF THE NATIONS: (Haggai 2:7) And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts. 8. LION OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH: (Revelation 5:5) And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. However, they did not expected Him to be: 1. MAN OF SORROWS: (Isaiah 53:3) He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 2. WORD: (John 1:1)In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 3. LIGHT OF THE WORLD: (John 8:12) Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. 4. THE TRUTH, WAY AND LIFE: (John 14:6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 5. Most importantly, they did not expected Him to be the LAMB OF GOD: (John 1:29) The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This time, let us look on some truths about Jesus Christ and His sufferings found in the prophetic chapter 53 of Isaiah. Let us study and find sobering and yet beautiful truths about our Lord Jesus Christ which the children of Israel at that time did not understand. WE SEE: I. THE SERVANT SAVIOR V. 1-2 This chapter is a continuation of Isaiah 52:13-15. God calls Christ “His servant”. What is the job of a servant? In what ways did Christ prove himself to be a servant? BRO. HAROLD DAVE O. CALACDAY SERMON ON ISAIAH We find the answer to this question in Philippians 2:6-8 as it tells us about Jesus being a servant. Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: [7] But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: [8] And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. A. We see Him as a tender plant. -It was expected that He should make a public entry and come in pomp and with observation; but, instead, He grew up before God, not before men. He grew up as a tender plant, silently and without any noise, as a tender plant grows. B. We see Him as root out of a dry ground. - His lineage was of the seed of David, a family that had a great name in the earth. However, He sprang out of his royal and illustrious family when it was reduced and sunk. Joseph (who was his supposed father), the son of David is not a king but a poor carpenter. ✓ These two picture the humanity of Jesus Christ and his servanthood to His Father to save us from our sins. II. THE SORROWFUL SAVIOR Vs. 3 As Jesus Jesus witnessed the corruption in the world, He can't help but be a man of sorrows. He sees the reality of the condition of man that we are sinners waiting for God's wrath and judgment and that we have no way of saving ourselves through religion and good works. He was despised and rejected of men. John 1:11 (KJV) He came unto his own, and his own received him not. The ones he came for were the ones who crucified him on that dreadful tree. III. THE SUBSTITUTIONAL SAVIOR V. 4-6 Notice: A. The carrying Romans 6:23a "For the wages of sin is death;" We were all dead in sin. We live sinful and unholy lives but praise God, because he bore our sins and died for us. BRO. HAROLD DAVE O. CALACDAY SERMON ON ISAIAH Romans 5:8 (KJV) But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. B. The chastisement The wrath of God to the sins of the world were all poured on the Lord Jesus Christ. All that were meant for us were laid on His body as a lamb to be slaughtered. 2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV) For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. C. The chance His “substitutionary atonement” brought us peace! Our spiritual sickness were healed at the cross! All our sins are paid in full! So when Satan tempts you or when He accuses you of your past say unto him, "ITS PAID IN FULL!" IV. THE SUFFERING SAVIOR V. 7-9 He suffered oppression, affliction and slaughter. The thing I can't fully comprehend is why Christ willingly suffered for us! We were His enemies. (James 4:4) Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. We were children of disobedience. (Ephesians 2:2) Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: We were sinners (Romans 3:23) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; who deserve nothing but hell. But PRAISE GOD, His grace abounded where sin was placed. The Bible tells us that he was cut of the land of the living, which is his ultimate death for us, sinners. Knowing this, consider that we are also called upon to suffer for Christ. BRO. HAROLD DAVE O. CALACDAY SERMON ON ISAIAH (Philippians 1:29) For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; This may be through: A. Temptations B. Persecutions C. Trials V. THE SATISFYING SAVIOR V. 10-12 Why was God satisfied with His righteous servant? Why was God “pleased” to pour out His wrath on the Lord Jesus? Because: A. We were offered eternal atonement for sins. (Romans 5:11) And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. B. We were offered an everlasting home in heaven. C. We were offered justification by grace. (Titus 3:7) That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. D. We were offered sanctification in our lives. (Hebrews 10:10) By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. CONCLUSION: If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator. If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist. If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist. If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer. BRO. HAROLD DAVE O. CALACDAY SERMON ON ISAIAH But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Savior. Unfinished Business, Charles Sell, Multnomah, 1989, pp. 121ff PRAISE GOD FOR AN UNEXPECTED SAVIOR! (Acts 4:12) Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. May we learn to follow God's will as we have studied God's peculiar and sovereign plan of Salvation. If you are still uncertain of your salvation, why don’t you get saved today? o It is not your works nor your religion that would save you, it is His Grace (Ephesians 2:8-9) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. o We cannot obtain eternal life because of anything that comes from us and we fall short of His glory. (Isaiah 64:6) But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. o God’s plan of salvation is simple and it is not what you have been taught of and what you have expected it to be. (Acts 20:21) Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Repent from your sins for it is your sin that puts you in a place of condemnation. (Luke 13:3) I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Then, put your faith in Jesus and accept Him as your personal Lord and Savior. (Acts 16:31; John 1:12) For those who have already been saved by Grace, may we also learn to live in holiness with surrendered lived to God in exchange of the unmerited grace we have received from the redemptive work of Christ.
