(Neupane, Aditya, 2021) • These dogs suffer from starvation, infected wounds and other illness. • Even though we celebrate “Kukur Tihar”, the day of the dogs, the street and stray dogs are considered “jutho” and are ignored. • For something that we ourselves are responsible for, we seem to ignore the situation where these animals are suffering. Street and Street Dogs in Thamel 1 INTRODUCTION History: • About 15 years ago, massive dog culling conducted to deal with dog population problem. • The number reduced with the number of dog bites in the country. • International animal rights protests and the Nepali love of dogs largely put an end to this. • Various other methods such as sterilization, caring, housing and education have been introduced since then. • All have ultimately failed to control the number of stray dogs in Nepal. (Bajracharya, Srizu, 2019) Mass Dog Culling at Chovar 2 INTRODUCTION Animal Care Facility: • Any facility that provides veterinarian care, food, water, or shelter to an animal. • Local animal care facilities such as Kathmandu Animal Treatment (KAT) Center, Animal Nepal and Sneha’s Care operating in the country. • Provide affordable facilities like training and treatment to the pets. • They attempt to adopt and transfer out as many healthy animals as possible • There aren’t enough facilities to accommodate the large number of animals who are either unwanted or lost, and the existing facilities are failing due to poor location. 3 NEED OF THE RESEARCH • • • • • • • Increasing number of abandoned dogs in the country. Reasons being old age of the dogs, unwilling to pay the vet bills, etc. Left in the street where they are prone to illness, injuries and even death, People commit cruel acts of violence with knives and boiling water or whatever they have in hand. Poisoning whole neighborhoods of dogs to reduce the population or eliminating the dangers of rabies, rather than inoculating and sterilizing. Create a space that can assist in the treatment of the dogs both physically and mentally as there is a direct relationship between shelter condition and the adoption success rate. 24-hour veterinary service planned to be incorporated in the design. 4 IMPORTANCE OF THE RESEARCH • • • • • Conducted in response to the current problem of abandoned street dogs seen throughout the Kathmandu valley. Learn about the current response of the society and government. Learn about the requirements to create a friendly environment for the dogs. Bring about a change in the way the street dogs are currently being treated. Incorporate environment-friendly and environment-responsive concepts. 5 PROBLEM STATEMENT NUMBER ACCIDENTS CREMATION 35,000 abandoned dogs in Kathmandu Valley. Getting run over by vehicles wandering around the roads Left in the road after passing until disposed on the roads by KMC. VIOLENCE DISEASES INJURY 81.43% street dogs having diseases and pathogens About 100 cases of dog bites everyday Unimaginably cruel behaviors to the dogs by some society members 6 OBJECTIVES • • • • Better environment for street dogs Physical and mental treatment of the street dogs. Design interactive spaces for the people and the animals. Educate the people about the street animals and adoption of new pets. Cover Illustration of “Sathi” by Jenny Campbell 7 RESEARCH QUESTIONS • • • • • • What are the requirements to design a comfortable habitat for the street dogs? What are the benefits and limitations of human-animal interaction? What are the special architectural requirements for the animals? How the animal behavior and features affect the design? What should be the proper location for the facility? How does the society respond to such facilities? 8 PROPOSED METHODOLOGY 1. • • 2. • 3. • • • Research Phase: Case Study Literature Review Site Visit: Site Analysis Design Phase: Program Formulation Planning o Concept Development o Zoning Preparation of Design o Architectural Plans, Elevations, Sections o Perspectives, 3D Views and Model Making 9 EXPECTED OUTPUT • • • • Create a better environment for the street dogs. Help in physical and mental treatment of the street dogs. Design interactive spaces for the people and the animals. Educate the people about the street animals and adoption of new pets. 10 TENTATIVE SITE LOCATION The site will tentatively be in Basundhara, Kathmandu. The site is taken considering the following factors: • Located in close proximity to the main road for easy access. • But, is located far enough such that the vehicle noise doesn’t create unpleasant environment for the dogs.
