Planet Earth
The axis of the Earth is an imaginary line between
the Earth’s poles. The Earth spins on this axis,
rotating once every 24 hours. The axis is tilted at
an angle of 23.5 degrees.
Around the middle of the Earth is an imaginary line
called the equator. The equator is an equal
distance from each pole, and divides the Earth’s
surface into the Northern and Southern
hemispheres.
Earth is the third planet from the sun. It orbits (goes
around) the sun every 365.25 days. It is the 5th
largest of the 8 planets in the solar system.
Earth is nearly spherical, but is slightly flatter at
each pole. The Earth has a diameter of
approximately 13,000km. Earth is composed
(made) of iron (32.1%), oxygen (30.1%), silicon
(15.1%), magnesium (13.9%) and small amounts of
the other other elements.
