GENDER SENSITIVITY
Presented by: Baljit Singh
MBA 1 (F)
Mankind or Humankind?
• Terms like “man,” and “mankind,” which are
used to describe all human beings, exclude
females. Why don’t we use ‘Humankind’?
• It’s been said that these words have an ridicule
effect on women.
• True gender sensitivity moves past these terms
where we ‘include all’ and ‘exclude none’.

Sex vs. Gender
• "Sex" refers to the biological and physiological
characteristics that define men and women.
• "Gender" refers to the socially constructed
roles, behavior, activities, and attributes that a
given society considers appropriate for men
and women.
Case Study
Impact of a program to diminish gender insensitivity and sexual harassment at a
medical school.
A program was conducted at Stamford University School of Medicine to check if a
Gender Sensitivity Program makes a difference in the thoughts of those who were the
part of this institution. To measure the effect of an intervention to reduce gender
insensitivity and sexual harassment.
METHOD:
Stanford University undertook a multifaceted program to educate faculty and
students regarding gender issues and to diminish sexual harassment. The authors
developed a survey instrument to assess the faculty's perceptions regarding
environment and incidences of sexual harassment. Faculty was surveyed twice
during the interventions.
RESULTS:
Between the two years, the authors measured significant
improvements in mean ratings for positive climate and cohesion
and decreases in the faculty's perceptions of sexual harassment,
gender insensitivity, and gender discrimination. The faculty also
reported fewer observations of harassing behavior during the
study period.
CONCLUSION: Intervention program to diminish gender
insensitivity and sexual harassment can measurably improve
environment in an institute.
Class, race, sexuality, gender and all other
categories by which we categorize and dismiss
each other need to be excavated from the
inside.
