BIOL224 Assignment #5: Microbial control– vpm034 (200443517) - W 2:30 (L02)
By recording my initials here [VP], I declare that the following assignment is my own original,
unaided work. Furthermore, I declare that I have cited and referenced the ideas of others; I
understand the penalties for failing to do so.
1. The main objective of this lab is how microbial colonization occurs and based on this we
can create a hypothesis, using diffusion disc experiments and studying how
microorganisms travel, we will be able to help restrict the spread of an infection in this
way. We can identify how the infection has become antibiotic-resistant and what other
drugs should be supplied using a pus sample from the patient. We'll also learn about
different sterilisation and decontamination methods, as well as how to avoid illness
spread. Because the patient has an infection that appears to be resistant to some
antibiotics, we will be able to discover which antimicrobial compounds are successful if
we can do a diffusion disc assay, and maybe this will cure the infection.

3. A. Collect the sample of the patient the purpose is to determine the drug which can
prevent the infection.
B. Use a detergent and the autoclave to disinfect Doctor’s dental tools to control microbial
growth.
C. Place samples on a blood agar plate and compare the two samples from 2019 to the
patient.
D. Chemically doped filter discs are used in a diffusion disc assay to see how susceptible
bacteria are to penicillin.
E. Using the holo table to determine an antibiotic's effect on a bacterium and which
antibiotic would be most effective in eliminating it
4. We can utilise a diffusion disc experiment to discover which drugs would be effective in
stopping or reducing an infection by understanding how to regulate microbial
development.
