Cognition is a term referring to the mental processes involved in
gaining knowledge and comprehension.
Thinking
Problem
solving
Knowing
Remembering
Judging
Cognition includes all processes of consciousness by which
knowledge is accumulated.
MENTATION
Mentation simply means mental activity.
Mentation Vs Cognition
• Mentation literally refers to any thought or mental activity, whereas
cognition is the process of perception or knowing.
COGNITIVE DISORDERS
• Cognitive disorders are a part of the neurocognitive disorders that
significantly impairs the cognitive function of an individual to the
point where normal functioning in society is impossible without
treatment. Some common cognitive disorders include:
• Dementia
• Developmental disorders
• Motor skill disorders
• Amnesia
• Substance-induced cognitive impairment
AMNESIA
• Amnesia on the other hand, is a serious mental condition affecting
a person's memory.
ANTEROGRADE AMNESIA:
• Inability to create new memories.
RETROGRADE AMNESIA
• Inability to recall previously made memories.
What Causes a Cognitive Disorder?
• Cognitive disorders are caused by a
variety of factors such as:
• Hormonal imbalances in the womb
• Genetic predisposition (E.g. mental
retardation)
• Environmental factors e.g.
1. lack of proper nutrients
2. Interaction during vulnerable stages of
cognitive development, particularly
during infancy
3. substance abuse
4. physical injury
5. exposure to neurotoxins
What Are the Signs of Cognitive Disorder?
Loss of short-term or
long-term memory
Impaired judgment
Identity confusion
Confusion
Poor motor coordination
