Art Appreciation GROUP 11 GROUP GROUP 1 The The Sequence: Sequence: An Artistic Journey FINAL EXAM REQUIREMENT GRAPE - CRAZY 100% Activity Activity six six six HANNAH MUSIC is an artistic experience catered to our sense of hearing. "a universal and allembracing art form that is present in all cultures." These changes in the characteristics of music over time are evident- from its purpose and composition, to the instruments used and the artists that made them. Indeed, history is also recorded in music. EMERY MUSIC nourished as time passed and it has become part of our cultural identity, in every moment of our life. If music is the soul, dancing on the other hand is the material body that gives physical embodiment to music. MUSIC is innately engraved to people and is honed along time Music used in worships and festivals are always associated with dance. This only makes the idea true about music being the soul of a cultural entity. It reflects mainly the overall beauty and aesthetic concept of their traditions. ANGELA MUSIC is the channel that allows people to connect, feel, understand, and even live for. If music is the channel, then dance is the utility that allows one to elaborate the act’s essence of the combination thereby sharing the true diegesis music and dance – are a beautiful mixture of rhythm that grants humanity the strength to live NIMROD MUSIC is the soul’s antidote. It represents the melody of our ethereal selves We resort to music as an outlet for what could barely be expressed or described in thousands of words It tells us stories of the past, the present, and even our apprehension of the future KATHERINE MUSIC gives us a journey to travel, not through the medium of the outside world’s realities, but through the imaginative realms we create within ourselves It can make us set aside our differences, and let us simply dance to the joys of life and living. You don't understand yourself either but then music comes along and shows you who you are. STEPHEN MUSIC I didn’t find it as a weight to be lifted but rather, it has been a culture, a mannerism, or even a characteristic is food to my soul and it has been my best friend AS AN ARTIST, music affects all of my process, it rekindles some of the forgotten techniques I have not been practicing with my art for so long. ZEBEDEA Activity Activity seven seven ART is an expression of one’s soul. It can deepen our understanding about ourselves and the world around us. they are able to capture personal moments in symbols or images, or even craft stories from them. It is said that artists pour a bit of their soul into every work of art they make. it is soul-making, or soul-”building”, process since it builds the understanding of ourselves, or our soul. HANNAH EMERY DA VINCI This chapter was rather enlightening. Within us lies the potential to be a genius, an artist perhaps who was insatiably hungry, he creates his craft by pouring his soul and heart out to create a story. To quote “the human mind is more powerful as we think it is.” ANGELA THESE PRINCIPLES Inspirations and imaginations trigger us to create something that has already been done and something that you only have the knowledge to create are the key to produce both an artwork and a soul. Whether it is a narrative or a drawing, you created that because there is a story that is needed to be unfold there is no beauty to be found if such craftsmanship lacks the very essence of a real creation and that is the soul of the work. when you create anything, may you be able to take pieces from the world, from your experience A CRAFTSMAN of any field is only considered an artisan once they are able to weave a soul unto their pieces and let that piece be a being worthy of its creation. NIMROD “ARTIST” we are a soul-maker in our own ways, and this is because soulmaking is a unique and worthwhile craft born out of the intelligence of the soul-maker What we exhaust from our minds and creativity is what we refer to as “art.” We expand our domains through guides that open doors leading to a new dimension that we can explore and obtain innovations from in the process. KATHERINE I THINK the most important thing I learned in this chapter is that I learn to observe with purpose and be very aware and conscious of my decisions. I started to view the world in shapes and color. A lot of people believe creating art is a process of emotions, feelings, passion, you get drunk or get high and throw paint on canvas STEPHEN ZEBEDEA The Seven Da Vincian Principles are some of the feelings, skills, or just the bursts of passions put into words and categories AS HUMAN BEINGS we feel, we touch, we think, and we act, and making use of these do not need talent but indeed create beautiful pieces of art There is no such thing as “talentless” Activity Activity Activity eight eight eight During the ancient times, the men were incharge of farming and harvesting the materials, while the women were in-charge of the weaving process. TEXTILE ART is not only art. It is an expression of one's effort, cultural background, familial roots, religion, and status Textile art is beautiful, but what makes it even more beautiful is the fact that it unites communities even more. HANNAH EMERY I get to appreciate traditional art more, specifically weaving that has been honed since the old times and up until now. ART does exist everywhere and its clothing isn’t exempted from that. Weaving shows the rich culture of the indigenous people Symbolisms, techniques, materials and the emotion poured by the craftsmen makes weaving beautiful that puts indigenous community to the spotlight of appreciation. With the sole intention of providing shield and covering to the human body, weavers’ creativity don’t cease on that purpose. ART Several of the textile art techniques are continuously practiced up until today that gave birth to novel form of these pieces. is not only grounded with songs, rituals and festival dances, paintings and drawings, and writing narratives but is also woven by hands. ANGELA yet those pieces woven by mastered hands represent a diverse and profound culture that signifies the strength of humanity’s capabilities of weaving comfort and pride onto pieces of clothing. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE One of the so-called basic necessities of humanity is the procurement of clothing to acquire the sense of protection and safety from the environment’s ever-changing times. of this is the art of weaving that utilizes textile art in their creation that manifests both style and comfort for any individual donning the fabrication. NIMROD Another outlet for art is through something that is literally made by hand—textile art like weaving TEXTILE ART like weaving. Like any form of art, textile art conveys stories which reflect culture. This form of art is accompanied by the materials the textiles are made with to strengthen the symbolisms the concocted arts possess. KATHERINE THE ART OF WEAVING, also known as weaving, is a skill dating back thousands of years, used to make clothing, tapestries, and other cloth products. the process of weaving is not easily put into categories. It can be considered as an utilitarian craft, but it also has its place within the history of art. In Greek mythology, the goddess of Wisdom, Athena, was so good at weaving that it became her sacred time-burner. STEPHEN WEAVING is a dying art, as much as people deny it, they can’t really hide the fact that weaving traditionally is dying and only few have made it their life’s dedication and purpose to preserve it. Every finished textile tells a story of a certain cultural group, a dying technique even, being rekindled by each of those who vowed to preserve it. we should embrace in this modern era as technology evolves and make everything easier, when we embrace it, then we can truly value that weaving is ZEBEDEA Activity Activity nine nine ART can truly communicate messages and reflect cultural identities. The Philippines is a culturally diverse country. This diversity of each area is uniquely expressed through art. HANNAH EMERY “MOTIFS” — an element of images that present the ethnic creations. By this, it gives us a functional way of effectively appreciating the works that basked with the rich culture of our country. I get to appreciate the identity of our own visual arts by deciphering the link between the beliefs, values, and the way living to the works Philippine visual arts bounds a wide spectrum of forms that was developed by Filipinos through different generations of ethnic communities combined with the influences from the colonizers. From woven products to architectures, decorative designs and patterns are sewed into an intricate form to give reflection on what soul has been living on them. DECORATIVE MOTIFS The styles and even the way the walls are carved are greatly associated with what a certain religious group believes in. depend on the people who created them. Just like the patterns weaved in textiles, motifs bear the symbol and mirror the culture of a group as well as the significance it holds to them. ANGELA With how we perceive the entirety of this plane, we are able to connect certain concepts, ideas, points, and other whatnots towards any signifying detail we deem important from those we’ve stared at. AS AN OVERALL art works, pieces, creations and other products created by humanity themselves are a linking point to who they are, where they come from, what they dream of These pieces range from artworks inspired by culture and history to the creations brought up by religion that ultimately still recognizes the essence of the country such as the vinta, the vakul, the sarimanok, the t’nalak, the church’s bell towers, and others. NIMROD Each country around the world has its own unique and colorful culture. These serve as the distinction and identification of the history they have gone through. all of the things which define a nation are reflected in the decorative arts one can observe in the region, just like how ancestral houses lined up in a community restore the memory TRADITIONAL MOTIFS and crafts are one of the applications of arts that mirror these distinctions within a country, or even in a community. KATHERINE STEPHEN It mirrors a peaceful scenery, a heartfelt Rejoice, an unexplainable lifeline, a reason of Motivation, a Confident Belief of Continuation of Passion, and the depth of the country's culture. The cultural diversity of the Philippines is rather prominent, especially in its artistic societies, where movements from different sides of the world collide to create breathtaking and beautiful masterpieces. PHILIPPINE VISUAL ART has no singular aesthetic—it is as rich and varied as the different regions on our archipelago. ZEBEDEA the Philippines is a combination, a mixture, better yet, a cocktail of different cultures and flavors brought by being colonized in our earlier years. A NATION is as great as its culture, while its true image and soul is reflected in its art. Cultural Identity is important to every society. The art and culture of a people represent the whole fit of a nation's history and civilization. Activity Activity Activity ten ten ten HANNAH It adds a sense of naturalness, or reality, to the otherwise monotonous memorization of an entire performance. IMPROVISATION is a useful and creative technique that enables more flexibility in the creation of various art forms. In fact, we improvise everyday! We live our life everyday, making our own different choices without even knowing what happens next. EMERY Up to what range do we understand the word improvisation? Unreadiness and improvisation are two different poles. Improvising is an old art form that has been used in various fields of arts. THIS CHAPTER gave me a wide-picture on investigating the nature and the philosophical boundaries of improvisation in arts most specifically in acting theater. By such successful discussion on this part, we get to perform much more efficiently and by the end, “the world is an ever changing sphere of life” engraves in our minds. Creating performances on the spot and making the best out of it is indeed fulfilling and satisfying to feel. IMPROVISATION practically saves someone from an utter fall back of something that is supposed to be purely scripted. With how you want that story to revolve, improvisation is indeed a key to create the perfect timing and snaps of events that would start to mend one by one, until a book is out for a show. ANGELA NIMROD Therefore, I say this to you, improvise all you want, pick those pieces apart, learn them bit by bit until a time comes where you have found who you are and how you deem your art. IN THIS CHAPTER, this delves more unto personal interest hence I would be relaying this insight in a manner that depicts the individuality within. Truly, the core of creation is the desire of showcasing one’s individuality that arouses others to seek for their own sense of self which may or may not lead to improvisation of that creation but will still provide the flow of creation. KATHERINE IMPROVISATION it is because it is dynamic and has the capability to be honed with no matter what kind of pressure it is subjected to. That is how art lasted after all those eras, and that is what art is for: to create something new, useful, senseful, and unique. tests one’s creativity and their ability to think on their feet, just like when a person is interrogated on the spot and needs to answer without prior preparations; in impromptu speech. STEPHEN If people didn’t improvise, they would only be able to do things they had done before or they would only be able to follow rules or they would only be able to develop new ideas with much, careful consideration. THE ONE THING that you have to have in common in any of these, is an innate sense of what your next couple moves are while you are actively doing the thing. The world is a place where new things happen all the time. If you can only follow rules or do things you have done before, you will be greatly handicapped. ZEBEDEA It really affects everything I do. I never joined on the spot contests, both in Speaking and Drawing contests because I sucked at improvising IMPROVISATION was never my strong suit because I am the type of person who wants to plan ahead before doing anything else. This activity was fun, and exhausting at the same time, improvising some things like how to adjust into making a”role play” even when we’re apart. Unforgettable Unforgettable Memory Memory from this Art Appreciation-Filled Semester 1 Art is a form of communication from the artist’s intention using materials and techniques to convey feelings and meaning to the observer. Artist Tobbe Malm from Oslo is both a blacksmith and a photographer. He uses single steel bolts to create sculptures. I get a sense of sadness and loneliness from his work. Every artist has their own unique way to express their ideas. What's unique about an artist is that it's the art they created. Other than this every artist is unique because each have their own thinking and imagination, they all observe things from a different point of you and nobody can have the same perspective. One may distinguish art making from art appreciation, but, as someone who draws, write, and paints occasionally, I find it convenient to collapse the distinction. Only art making, in fact, can give me such a sudden impulse and sustained motivation to accomplish such, without much rational calculation whether doing so would be beneficial or worthwhile in the utilitarian sense. I wouldn’t consider myself as an artist (yet), but I suppose all of us who make art aspire to better grasp the notion of beauty in our craft, an intrinsic value that requires little consideration for morality and utility. That is why i find Chapter 7 unforgettable. It did not only taught me how to consider art in different perspective but also allowed me to view various arts in its every forms, and its pure essence. One of the best thing I learned is that, a substantial part of art making is concerned with communication. The linguistic apparatus is, most of the time, incomparable with the capacity of the visuals. This is not to downplay of language, but merely to suggest that the visuals have a distinctive communicative potential. In the following succesive activities presented, art itself being progressive has attempted to connote and describe emptiness, vacuousness, and a sense of loss, through the process of fragmentation and deconstruction storytelling, and philosophical whims. Words would dress the same connotations in totally different light. Everything might end and lose but not art. It is the human creative skill and it is limitless, endless. It is imagination and imagination has no boundaries. What we visualize when we say art is paintings and drawings. But ART SPEAKS WHERE WORDS FAIL. You can make someone see something through your eyes by art. You can make and depict anything with your hands. Art is so diverse, that it can be different and unique in every person's head. A simple piece of artwork can have as many perspectives as the number of people watching it. It will never bore you, the possibilities it creates for you will make you act and achieve in your life. Art's spectrum is the most beautiful thing in the world. 22 Aside from a horror-filled roller coaster ride, who can’t forget the music video activity we had once? Well, the singing and dancing part of the activity is utterly a struggle but that’s what made the activity a lot more fun. The very first meeting we had to discuss about the activity became an automatic singing audition. Who wouldn’t be struck knowing that you had to sing a part from a song when you had all the audacity to cringe at your own voice? Yes!! Who would be confident enough? But the audition seemed to go smooth sailing as we did have the parts divided among us. And thinking of a nice and jolly song, we all ended up picking a christmas song. We did a lot of practice in memorizing the song as well as put ourselves in tune. Lucky enough that technology has always been never ceasing to develop everyday, we resorted into using an app that could tune down our voices and make it more pleasant to hearthank God for having those!! As for the interpretative dance we needed to choreograph for the song, good thing our friend youtube helped us all the way. We were able to find a simple yet decent dance choreography for the song. However, due to some instances on home addresses, performing the interpretative dance was not a good resort for us not until our ever creative group members came up the idea of doing the dance in a sign language form. It was really a brilliant idea as we put emphasis on dedicating our performance for our beloved mute and deaf brothers and sisters. It was such a great honor to be able to make something very valuable in their stead. It was fulfilling, nonetheless. We performed our parts and even wore something Christmas related. The whole activity was fun and will always be something we can look back at as a positive and genuine activity despite not being able to do it at school. Our presentation went well and we were really thankful for the deep appreciation of Miss Inoc about our work. Everything was absolutely perfect but not the time when we hear our own drowning voices and cringe at the sound of it! 33 Unforgettable memory and Art Appreciation, in one sentence? Well, there’s plenty to choose from that just evokes random emotions of joy, hope, interest, bliss and a whole other set that just blows one’s mind as is the stature of any when it comes to art. For us, well particularly for me, one of the most unforgettable might be those creative products and pieces I’ve made during the entire duration of this semester, especially the ones that explore the world of horrors and thrills. To be honest, I am not someone who loves viewing media related to that genre since I’m easily spooked to the point of not being able to sleep but with how my friends wanted us to tackle those projects, in a new and interesting way, who would I be to decline their enthusiasm? Indeed, it was a work of art for all of those pieces, they came from genuine inspiration and experience that allowed me to venture out of my comfort zone, to see another realm to explore for my growth as an artist. The very first piece of horror-related work was about creating a photo gallery with our own discretion on the genre/topic for it and well, it took us time to distinguish what genre we wanted to pursue on that. Choices and polls were brought to the table where the last two points of topics were the ever-trendy love for the environment and the shockingly but always there, horror --- well, we know what was chosen. From there, they suggested some random ploy on how to showcase the gallery in a way that would entice the audience and made us feel like directors, truly, it was a mess; an artistic mess. And I, as spontaneous as could be, jumped right in to create a story with the sets of pictures sent to make the viewing experience even more wild and subjective – a worthwhile project honestly, especially with the images they sent that just roused up my creative instincts and the fuel for my fear of the unknown. As such, the story of a young girl growing up with her doll came to be, to the point that I might create a sequel for it in the future, who knows? Anyways, from there, we were heavily influenced from the rush of horror and thrill that reflected unto the second piece alright. This time, creating an actual story based on a beautiful sculpture of our choosing and we just couldn’t stop ourselves from wanting to make another story that is an amalgamation of different stories with one resulting conclusion. Here, with countless of sculptures to decide on, we decided on something that all know of yet may not always be a topic worth considering, after all, it might come out blasphemous; oh, what a heart-racing choice, indeed. We chose a sculpture that showcased the seven deadly sins that shows the intricacy of the piece as well as the depth of the story of each sin. Here on out, I just went with what my instincts told me, make each story such a beautiful picture that you wouldn’t want it to end then crush all of their hopes till they’re bleeding empty. Morbid, I know, but interestingly enough, everyone loved the flow of the stories as they were shared to the class. Even the way our professor praised on the rollercoaster ride of each one and how the essence of the story was that each were blessed to be removed from such bliss. Apart from that, my group members who told the stories as if they were such entities, were just breathtaking and I truly appreciate the way they gave life to the words and sentences I engraved unto the paper. To me, to someone who loves to create, that was such an exceptional moment. Continuing on, to the last piece, to the piece that was such a blast to perform and make really, since it held too many bloopers, inactive sessions, and actual scenarios from the story itself – well, except from the youngling doing the scaring. This time I only created the story and directed some bits where most of the work was done by my friends and the result was just spectacular. Seriously, I don’t have a lot of words to describe the films being shown since each group gave their best, and in each one, one could feel the story, flow with the characters, and just, connect really. All in all, those pieces thriving with horrific energy are such a worthwhile venture for me, for someone who’s not interested in such concepts, it was truly a new experience, a challenge worth tackling and an avenue worth pursuing as well. Then to my friends, my group members who gave their all, those pieces couldn’t live as they were without your soul’s marking such craftsmanship and I am thankful for that. To our professor, Miss Inoc, thank you for granting such freedom and allowing us to explore any avenue we could find to perform your tasks, it was a creative adventure. This is us, Group 1 saying such memories will always be a part of us, that it’ll be something amazing to look back to and feel the growth we had during such times, to a path nurturing our artistic freedom. And this is me, sharing to you guys one of the most unforgettable memories I created from this course called Art Appreciation under Miss Inoc. As a parting note, my pen name is Vandel, hope you’ll be able to see him in bookstores someday or in areas that are filled with creative spirit. After all, Vandel is a vandal that loves to create. Overall Overall Impression Impression from this Art Appreciation-Filled Semester "Aish! MAPEH ang peg ani nga subject" and "aaaah, duka siguro ni ay" were two of what came to mind as the subject Art Appreciation came to view among this semester's courses we must take. We have the tendency to 'test the waters' for every subject by looking into its scope (that is, aside from the 'time slot'), and then groan. Why do we even need to ‘appreciate the art’ when we can just go on about our lives without having to overtly recognize its importance? We wailed even more as To Do's kept popping for this subject alone. We were only on our first week since classes reopened, but we were already faced with a plethora of activities! Who wanted to see that first thing in the morning? And we were like, “Wow! Unbelievable.” But these tendencies were beleaguered as the first meeting was dropped like a bomb, slapping us in the face that college was on a whole different level from high school. Having a good laugh every meeting is an understatement. We anticipate the next meeting for a good and relatable discussion and of course, the presentations for each activity from other groups. What fueled ourselves to dedicate every fiber of our being into the activities and performance tasks we must do are the positive feedback and appreciation we get from the professor. Never once did we fear for the following week to arrive, or entertain the apprehension that whatever we have come up with for the next presentation would be underappreciated and tossed to the bin. That only goes to show that with even a small yet kind gesture, it can push us to do something beyond our capabilities, not just because we want to hear another yet good remark, but also because we know deep inside that we're up for the challenge of being worthy of being on the receiving end. Reading the compiled module does not even irk us. In this sem, 9 o’clock meetings were something we look forward to. It was more like we get to have a good start on our days by letting out unmasked laughter. Art Appreciation basically taught us to revere the tested with time and aged masterpieces. We get to comprehend the necessity of different factors which have influenced the transformation of artworks as they transition from one era to another. We get to grasp the significance of the [what then seemed to be] insubstantial elements, which little did we know, serve as the edifice for the overall structure of art and its derivatives. We get to delve into the depths of art and its rings and the magnitude of putting soul into one's creations. We get to value even the [what seemed to us as] most grotesque artwork we have ever made, and that is because the professor made us feel that whatever we make, it is never uncredited. Not only did the subject teach us tangible arts, it also opened our eyes to the art of life. Doors to the past and cultures were opened to us to understand even more the trifecta questions: what has been, what it could have been, and what changes could be made about it in the future? Art Appreciation isn’t merely another subject that is added to our loads for the sake of having another set of units, it is a requisite in reflecting similar events that make up the backbone of the degree program we are in. ART APPRECIATION ACHIEVED; ART APPRECIATION APPRECIATED. THANK YOU
