The month of March is Women’s History Month and there are so many amazing women in history for your students to research. You can choose a variety of women and have students pick or have students choose their own woman to research. There are classroom posters that you can use as a guide for a mini lesson on researching and writing. Students will complete the writing process in their flipbook and publish writing on the lined paper provided. There is also a page for students to illustrate their famous woman. Type in your keywords and look for reliable websites that you can use for research. List 5 websites that you can come back to use. Cover page and #5 front to back. The top half of the cover page will be upside down, that is ok! 2. #1 and #4 front to back. 3. #2 and #2 front to back. 4. Make sure that the boxes are lined up properly. Depending on your copier or printer, please test and see if you need to flip the pages to line up properly. When I print to my printer two sided, I choose: flip on the short side. 5. Line up the bottom of the flip book from 3-5. 6. Carefully flip the book over so number 2 lines up with number 3 and fold along the top. 7. The author is someone other than the person featured in the text. Use this checklist as you are editing: As you are rereading your writing, look for the following: Spelling Punctuation Capitalization Grammar usage Order (writing is in a clear order) Do you have a clear Introduction? Do you have a clear closing? Don’t be afraid to get your paper MESSY. Use your colored pencil to fix those mistakes! Read it and reread it again! Ask a friend to help too, a friend might catch a mistake that you have missed! Use a dictionary or a thesaurus to help! 5 ©Two Little Birds Editing EDITING: I can proofread and fix my mistakes. Get your colored pencil ready! As you edit, make changes. Editing is your chance to make things right! Your first draft was your chance to get your words on the paper, now it is your time to make them perfect! As you edit, use your colored pencil to make changes. Use these marks as you edit: To start a new paragraph ¶ ˄ To insert a missing word, letter, or punctuation mark. sp To check the spelling of a word. To capitalize a letter. To use a lowercase letter. Write a report… 1 Biography writing PREWRITING: I can collect and organize my ideas and details. Topic: Where did she grow up? What was her childhood like? Who were important people in her life? REVISING: I can make changes to my writing to improve it. As you revise, have your pencil ready to make changes. Carefully reread your writing. Look for places you can add in details, adjectives, descriptions. You can add words or whole sentences. As you are rereading, look for any words or sentences that you can remove words or sentences that are unnecessary or repeated. Look for any words and sentences that are out of place. Can you move them? Moving the order of your writing can help your writing flow! Did you notice words in your writing that you may have repeated? Substitute those words with synonyms. Look at the beginning of each sentence and your transition words, make them stand out rather than repeat! All done?
