April survival guide Ideas & resources for the month of April Are you ready for April? Here are some activities, books, ideas, and fun for you and your students as you plan for the month ahead. Here’s a few books that you may love to read in April: This is an affiliate link. You can find all these favorite books here. The following pages are a “survival guide” full of activities for April. You can click on each photo or link to be taken to the resource or book mentioned. Please note that many of the resources shared are free resources and some of them are paid resources. These are all just suggestions to help with your planning. ©Two Little Birds April Survival Guide April Fool’s Day • • • Morning Work Have some fun with your students and give them THIS word search where the words are not actually in the puzzle. Play a fun “directions prank” with them and see who falls for it! Read about April Fool’s Day with THIS close reading passage. Celebrating Ramadan: • Read “Ramadan Around the World” and discuss the traditions of Ramadan. • Complete THIS foldable book for Ramadan. DAY 2 Passover: • Read “More Than Enough” and discuss traditions of Passover. Using eggs to engage: • You can have lots of fun egg hunts with cheap plastic eggs you can find in April. Grab THESE two activities for writing practice: adding details and spring writing prompts. Hide the slips in the eggs and hide the eggs inside (or even outside)! Poetry Month: • Create a “Poetry Pack” filled with books of poems and student poems for students to take turns taking home to share. • Set up poetry centers to give students opportunities to read and write poetry. • Practice writing poetry. • Set up a basket of favorite poems and books to read. My First 4.54 Billion Years” and have students complete THESE digital activities. Read “My Friend Earth” and have students complete THESE digital activities. Have students complete THIS foldable Earth Day book. • Read “Ada’s Violin” and THIS close reading passage about the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay. Watch THIS video and discuss the recycled instruments. • Discuss recycling, reusing and how students can reuse materials just as the orchestra did! DAY 2 Figurative Language: • To tie into Poetry Month, review figurative language by reading “Parts”, “More Parts,” or “Even More Parts.” • Have students practice different forms of figurative language in THIS flipbook. Back from Break: • As students are ready to talk all about their spring break, you can use THIS foldable book to guide the conversations in your morning meeting.
