Science Lesson Plan
Key Stage 3
Class: Yr 8.3
Review lesson: Learning Objectives:




Date: 12 May
Topic: Food and digestion
Learning Outcomes:
that large molecules are broken down by enzymes in the gut to
form smaller molecules, which pass through the wall of the small
intestine
how models can be used to represent and explain complex
processes
that food is digested by enzymes in the gut to form smaller
molecules
to represent a complex process using diagrams and text
Previous Lessons:
Parts of the digestive system and their Structural suitability to
function
KS3 Strategy References: Unit 8A, lesson 5
• That food is digested with the aid of enzymes to produces
smaller molecules that can be absorbed into the blood
• Identify suitable conditions under which enzymes function in
the digestive tract
Vocabulary:
Enzymes
Protease
Carbohydrase
lipase
pH
Resources: powerpoint presentation, animations, rubics cube,
small ball

Opportunities
Starter
5 mins
Identify the main parts of the digestive system
Submit answers to labelling parts
of digestive system
Main
5mins
Remind pupils about the way in which the body uses food. E.g., for
energy, for growth
Through questioning, elicit pupils’ ideas about digestive enzymes as a
means of breaking down larger molecules – Use the cube and ball
analogy.
10 mins
Suggest ideas for other simple
analogies to explain the idea of a
large molecule being broken
down into individual parts
Remind pupils of the range of food types with large molecules and explain
that in addition to enzymes the conditions inside the gut assist the
breakdown of large molecules – such as body temperature and pH. Inform
pupils that HCl is made inside the stomach lining.
Use of simple practical diagrams to remind students of enzyme action
5mins
Discuss constant variables
referring to temperature and pH
of water
Plenary
5 mins
Complete the fill in exercises on the last two slides of the presentation.
Homework:
Write down one sentence to explain how good bacteria in our gut helps with digestion.
