Quick Lab: Magnets
Materials:
● Several small unmarked magnets
● A marked magnet
● A magnetic compass
● Stickers
● A compass app (optional)
Procedure:
1. Collect the materials.
2. Use a compass app, or some known landmarks, to determine which direction in
the room is north.
3. Confirm that the magnetic compass points north. Which side of the needle do
you read?
4. Use the magnetic compass and the marked magnet to determine which side of
the compass needle is attracted to which “pole” (north or south) of the
magnet. Record your findings.
5. Use both the compass and the marked magnet to determine what
side/face/surface of the unmarked magnets is north. Use a sticker to mark
those sides. Describe your method of determining the north side of the
unmarked magnets below.
