An imperative sentence is a group of words which expresses a complete thought in a form of commands as well as requests. This sentence usually ends with a period. The imperative is the form of the verb we use to give directions, instructions, suggestions, or advice. We also use it to give direct orders. The imperative is easy to form. We simply use the base form of the verb. What makes a command different from a request? A command is an imperative sentence which simply tells the listener to do a certain thing. Examples: Invite friends to join the celebration. Read your lesson and do your assignment. Bring your books tomorrow. Eat healthy foods. Wash your hands and face regularly. Avoid crowded place. Pray always. It is quite different from requests. Although they both tell the listener to do something, a request possesses a factor of more respect to listeners. This imperative is commonly used in commanding elders but it is more appreciative if it is also used to command listener younger than the speaker. Examples: Please bring those books here. Kindly pick up the pieces of paper on the floor. Reserve a seat for me, please. Open the door for me, please. The Imperative Voice is very direct. In normal conversation, it isn’t always the best way to express yourself because it can seem very impolite. However, in a situation like giving directions, the Imperative Voice is necessary: you might not have a lot of time to give the directions before you miss a turn! Examples: You will need to turn left up here. It’s a good idea to take the next left. Study your lesson every day. road directions Fasten your seat belts. Look for the unfamiliar words and search for their meanings. Be careful when driving. Write legibly. Study for the test. To make the imperative negative, place the words ” do not” or “don’t” in front of the base form of the verb. Examples: Do not take the left road. Do not stop walking until you see the stoplight. Don’t talk when your mouth is full. Do not wear that kind of dress. Do not use blue ink pen. Do not forget your assignment. Using prepositions when giving directions 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
