Question 1 [10 Marks]
A vehicle of mass M=2 tonnes travels from Lusaka to Kabwe on a stretch of a deformed
bituminous road induced by various factors under investigation by a team of civil engineering
students from Mulungushi University.

The deformed section can be described by a harmonique function given by: π‘₯ = π‘₯𝑔 cos(πœ”π‘‘).
Considering that the tires have infinite stiffness and are always in contact with the surface of
the road, find the maximum vertical displacement π‘₯π‘šπ‘Žπ‘₯ that the car is subjected to for the
following cases of damping:
a) πœ‰ = 0
b) πœ‰ = 0.4
We are given: 𝐿 = 15π‘š; 𝑉 = 20π‘š/𝑠; 𝑀 = 2 π‘‘π‘œπ‘›π‘›π‘’π‘ ; 𝐾 = 20𝐾𝑁/π‘š; π‘₯𝑔 = 3π‘π‘š

The building below is subjected to two different successive impulse loads as shown below.
Considering that, the given structure has the following initial conditions:
π‘₯0 = π‘₯Μ‡ 0 = 0
and
𝑀 = 10π‘‘π‘œπ‘›π‘›π‘’π‘ ; 𝐾 = 1000 𝐾𝑁⁄π‘š ; 𝑃0 = 30𝐾𝑁
a) Show that the displacements:
π‘₯(𝑑 = 0.1s) = 1.63π‘π‘š
π‘₯(𝑑 = 1s) = 1.86π‘π‘š
b) Compute the following displacements:
π‘₯(𝑑 = 1.1s)
π‘₯(𝑑 = 3.0s)
